Help for someone new - what to buy?!

Evening all. As it's my first post I guess an introduction is in order. Married, middle aged, lots of kids (!) and looking to change my weekend plaything :)

I had a Caterham for a few years and will someday go back to Seven ownership. At the moment the weekend toy is an MX5 although I have the chance to upgrade to something else.

The choice is either an Elise or an Impreza but if I opt for the latter I've no idea what to buy. It doesn't have to have a million BHP (and after writing off the Caterham the insurance would be horrid anyway) and there seems some really good bargains on low mileage 2-3 year old WRX's (£8-9k).

I'm not sure of the real differences however between the STi, WRX or anything else. All I know is I have a Scooby itch that needs scratching! Can anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks, Ian :)

Welcome :)

I was in exactly the same place as you about a month ago...

I have kids as well so weekend toy needed 4 seats after considering all sorts - I went for a test drive in a 2003 STI and was hooked...I didn't buy that one as the dealer would not move on the price...

I have just bought a UK 2003 STI from Richard at RRH Autos Ltd top bloke :thumb: really knows his stuff and owns a 400bhp scooby as well..

Differences between wrx and STI from what I remember

6 speed STI - WRX 5 speed
stronger engine on the STI
and different front diff but cant remember exactly...

When I asked the same question the reply was 100% STI

Also the uk 2005 model is different from the 2003-2004

and JDM cars are higher spec as well...

hope that helps

Thanks, sammydice. I'll have a look at RRH and see what's what.

For now, I think I'm erring on a 4/5 seat weekend plaything so the Scooby is top of my list. Having read through the forum recently it seems the STi is recommended over the WRX although I'm still not sure why the WRX is seemingly so undesirable.

As I said, I don't necessarily needs tons of power, or not at least until I can convince my insurance company I'm not going to play on black ice again :D .
