Rebuilt engine or well maintained original?
Still hunting for my 1st scooby. Came across a couple but now stuck in another dilema. Do I go for a original car or one with a rebuilt engine? Part of me thinks if it has all orginal parts, well serviced its gonna last. On the other hand if the engine has been replaced along with clutch and box then all major work has been done and its gonna last. Any advice would be apreciated. Also, how much stronger is a forged engine and what makes it stronger
Thanks |
to be fair you are better of going for a car you like, just because the engine has been rebuilt it doesn't mean that the car was neglected.
a well maintaned original engine doesn't mean it is going to last. A rebuilt engine doesn't mean it is going to last, could be a cack build. You need to look at lots of cars and buy the one you fall in love with, rebuild or no rebuild...... it must have good history though! |
I would go for a rebuilt one allthough I would want to reciepts from a respected company.

Ok I'll keep searching. One thing that is going in my favour is the price.
Thanks |
What sort of car are you after... classic /bugeye etc.....

A question that needs hindsight to answer.....

You could always look for a very good example that has just blown up. It will happen from time to time. You'll find someone will blow all their money on an Impreza, it blows and they can't afford to fix it.
Buy it cheap with engine knock, take it to a reliable engine builder and have the engine rebuilt. Least you know the engine and hopefully get warranty. I'd be more concerned looking at a car thats had 'box rebuilds or clutch changes under say 70K running standard boost. IMO transmission problems indicates poor treatment - i.e. a sub 50k miles car thats had a clutch change in my mind means its been abused. |
