I've got a track day on Sunday, not with my Scoob but in a 306 GTI - 6 (21st Birthday pressie)

Has anyone got any tips on how to tackle the course ?

If its a track day you won't be racing or you will be asked to leave. There will be people there with vastly more experience than you who have been doing it for years (I assume by the nature of your question its your first time)so don't try to F**k with Eagles 'till you can fly is the best advice!!. If they have instructors, grab on first thing an get him to show you the lines etc. Once you have the lines right speed will come automatically. Silverstone is a great circuit but be very aware that it has armco all the way round it and this can hurt you as well as your car.

I presume this is a bought day in one of Silverstone's own cars.....in which case, unfortunately, you will probably be using the Stowe circuit - a not terribly inspiring bit of tarmac wedged up at the inside of Stowe corner and not connected to the proper track at all:(

Tips? - just listen to what the instructor says....oh, and you will probably have a 4000rpm rev limit as well...

If it is the full circuit make sure to build up speed gradually. Silversone is so wide that it hard to judge your speed - ie there is much less sensation of speed than at other circuits.

The 1st bend at the end of pit straight is very dangerous if you don't give it respect. Definatly take it easy through there to begin with. You more than likely heard about the P1 that rolled there in September @ Trax.

But other wise enjoy and let people who are quicker through...

They will probably know the track a hell of a lot better than you!

Also stay out of trouble otherwise you won't be very popular if you cause other drivers to loose track time!

But hey enjoy... its a great track! :D :D :D

They also use the 306s on the 'south' part of the main track as well, which is quite a nice layout, though you don't get the GP pit straight and Copse (first corner on the GP). Watch out for the yellow Elises if they've got any out at the same time; they'll be all over you in the corners, but you can lose them on the straights...

take it easy round the first corner. It dont look it but it is ever so slightly off camber, I felt the cossie twitching when I went round it and I wasnt going for it (much;))

Thanks for the replies every one. Just to clarify, it won't be in my own car, but in one of Silverstone's "own" 306s.

Its an "Octagon Motorsport" day which anyone can purchase. I thought there might be no racing and srev limiters :(

I done the Lotus Elise day last year,sharing the track with the 306's,and a few others(caterhams,ferraris and jags).
Itsd great fun,the instructors are quite competitive,so if he thinks you are an able driver he will push you towards your limits,but if you are crap,you would make him look bad,so you take it easy.

You WILL be on part of the main track,I made it round the corner that a certain F1 driver couldnt a little while ago!

All I can say is 'HAVE FUN,AND ENJOY IT'.

Do you know that you will also be scored for cornering braking ect.?

I have actually driven there in one of their 306's.....

I don't think they will allow you out on your own either, so it will be under pretty strictly controlled circumstances. Not trying to put a dampener on it, just being realistic...

If you can get Paul Taft or Clive Baker as your instructor

I think Silverstone is a good circuit -- if you have about 500 bhp ;)

I went round in an Impreza and the track is so bloody wide it's largely irrelevant which line you take around corners (and it's easy to get lost in the middle of a corner, there's so much tarmac). Also to me it seems it's clearly designed for higher-powered cars as your exit speed from one corner means that you aren't going fast enough to make the next one a challenge. I did the 'National' circuit and practised it on TOCA 2 for the PS1 first. When I got to the track I didn't recognize any of it (if I didn't make it clear enough earlier, it's much wider than it appears to be on the PSX ;) )
