What is the spool up like with this turbo on a 2.0L? Just I've heard mixed reports.....some amazing .....and others tons of lag........?

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 08:03 PM

Assuming you are talking about adding to your Sti then the AVCS heads will help.. should be around the 4000rpm mark.. they spool very quick when they get to that rpm.. lag as in gearchange lag is not an issue.

i would assume it would be similar to a 2.1 with V3 STi RA heads then?

Just gathering some info :)

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 08:09 PM

2.1 seem to spool very very well.. so yes.. deffo..

Simon

terzo320 26 January 2009 08:11 PM

great turbo on my 2l not too laggy, had a 12.5 sec run at santapod last year

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 08:12 PM

AVCS heads, what are these? I was pondering over the tubular or ported from Harveys.....not really looked in to headers to be honest, but think I should along with my other mods....

Isn't 4bar quite late spooling?

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 08:18 PM

The ecu controls the cams as they are variable etc.. vtec for if you put it in honda terms :)

that will be full boost.. it will be pulling well before that.

Simon

WReX1990 26 January 2009 08:33 PM

With the right set up and good mapping, no lag...
1.6 bar by 4k RPM

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 08:41 PM

Oh right, full boost by 4k.........thats not bad actually is it!

Do I have AVCR's?? And will that be something you teak Simon when you map it? Also, will changing stock headers be worth doing....like ported/tubular?

Sorry for sounding thick.

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 08:44 PM

Yes all the newage sti's have AVCS, then all the 2.5 from 06 have AVCS including WRX.

Yes play with AVCS when mapping, yes worth changing the headers..
ported work well but at this power level I would go tubular.. the 3bolt flanged one work very well and come with their own uppipe.

Simon

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 08:47 PM

Sweet, thanks again.

Other than the Harvey tubular ones, what other do people use with proven results?

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 08:54 PM

Oh, also.......do you need to change the turbo inlet pipe....or is this optional?

Thanks

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 09:22 PM

Mark at Lateral who sells the MD321T also does tubular headers.
I haven't knowingly mapped anything with Harvey's tubualr headers on.

you can get the turbo compressor housing so it mates with the standard inlet pipe.

Simon

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 09:35 PM

Thanks :)

Is there any advantage of getting the Samco type inlet pipe, or is that just to look pretty?

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 09:39 PM

not seen any difference with standard size compressor housing or larger..

Simon

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 09:41 PM

Cool, cheers.

banny sti 26 January 2009 09:42 PM

The graph from a MD321T on a 2litre with non avcs heads will look very similar to this:

Going 4 400bhp 26 January 2009 09:43 PM

I get full boost of 1.7 at about 4200:wonder:

And it is such a fat kick up the bum from anything else iv ever been in!

It's great to have someone in the car who has never been for a ride in it before:norty: It's pretty quick to 4k but when that turbo turns on i try and have a look at there face:lol1: There hand starts to look for something to hold too:D

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 09:46 PM

Sounds good Ash!!! lol

What mods was that with Banny? Everything in your 'view my scoob'?

Better mods than me, as I wont have anything forged (other than the standard sti pistons).

This is what I'll have/have now:

Engine:
3" Full de-catted Stainless Exhaust, including up and down pipe
K&N Cold Air Intake
Walbro Fuel Pump
HKS Fuel Pressure Regulator
ECUTek Remap by Scoobyclinic
Dump Valve
GFB Quick Shift

Sat in my sitting room, ready to go on:
Hybrid FMIC
750cc Injectors (flow matched)
Apexi AVCR

Got to buy:
MD321T
Tubular Headers
JGM Remap

Going 4 400bhp 26 January 2009 09:59 PM

Nothing forged and a MD321T?

Are you sure you wanna do that? Would a H not be better for your car, Safer?

chrisdicko 26 January 2009 10:03 PM

JGM, Andy Forrest, Mark@Lateral all suggested the T over the H....

Jolly Green Monster 26 January 2009 10:05 PM

The standard sti newage motor can run to mid 400s.. :)

Done enough to know they are reliable at that..

Should be getting lots of torque at 1.7bar Ash?

Simon

Going 4 400bhp 26 January 2009 10:06 PM

I'm happy with that then:top::beer:

It dose kick but i had a bad result on the rollers at torque of the devil!

Going to take the car down to Surrey to see what that shows?

I nice report will be up once all is sorted but torque so far is only 335:(

But on the road the car mooovvvveeesssss!!!:wonder:

After emailing him with what mods I'd have on etc, and what I want.....I got the same answer back from the above....

dunx 26 January 2009 10:42 PM

Hi Chris,

I've got the H with "headers" and a 3" de-cat on my 2.0 STI and it's quite lively, (mixture checked on the "rollers"), even still waiting for a JGM re-map it kicks like a mule, and I can get 26 mpg on a motorway run. Unless you are going to pull the motor and forge everything next, I'd think the H would be fine for a road car. IMHO

Spools hard from around 3K rpm, and all hell breaks loose soon after, and the Samco makes more noise than my DV ! Hannibal Lector or what ! Trying to get a piece of video for Youtube, but my pal KojaK didn't appear this weekend for a play.

chrisdicko 27 January 2009 06:42 AM

Hi Dunx,
What do you mean the Samco makes more noise than the Dump Valve?

I will be going forged at the end of the year, or next year. So wanted to future proof the turbo if you get me. I'm sure Simon will map it safely seens my engine isn't forged etc.
I just don't want to buy the H, then regret it when I do more work on the car and have to replace it for the T.

Thanks :)
