Is my battery now just completely knackered?

Battery has been not very good for a while but so long as I give it a full charge from the mains every couple of weeks things have been OK and I drive with the sidelights on etc. I took the car out yesterday and did around 60 miles with no problems. Today it just wouldn't start. I've charged it all day and the charger is giving me a green light for full charge. The car still won't start and its the usual alarm going off when I try. Car will lock properly.

I know it must be the battery but just wondered if it could be anything else related as well? Do batteries suddenly die completely? Recommended replacement seems to be the Halfords HCB 005.

Turn your headlights on and try and start it - if the lights go dim/go out, then your battery is kippered.
If the lights stay bright and it wont crank over, might be the starter motor/ignition switch/immobiliser etc.
Be wise to check the charge rate also if you can get it started.

Top tip Mick. The lights practically go out on attempting to start. Looks like a trip to Halfrauds tomorrow. Cheers.:thumb:

Can u get hold of a volt meter?
Be a good idea to check your alternator, it can also give a good indication to the state of ur battery.

Its the second battery the car has had. Previous owner replaced the first one. Car is in for a service in a couple of weeks so I'll get alternator checked out, as I've been concerned for a while that the battery wasn't getting properly re-charged on the road. It does seem current battery is foobarred though!
