What's it worth threads

Folks what are your thoughts on these types of threads clogging up the general section?

bluenosewrx 14 January 2009 06:21 PM

its annoying yes, however there are at least 5 or 6 every day that has nothing to do with The general subaru section, there is a RS Focus one on there now that should be moved.

The mods all wanted to do the job but are sloppy IMO.

Norman Dog 14 January 2009 06:41 PM

Any idea how much my MY03 WRX with 36k miles, FSH, modded to 280+ BHP is worth? :wonder:

scoobyste1987 14 January 2009 06:44 PM

lol at norman

G-string 14 January 2009 06:45 PM

Well click the https://www.scoobynet.com/images/buttons/report.gif icon on the offending post then (honestly, I do wonder sometimes)

Converse to popular beliefs, mods are not psychic, nor view every single post on every single thread on every single page in every single sub-section 24/7. :)

Anyhoo, whats it worth threads. Yes, useless to the community IMO: nobody can accurately gauge the value of a car via proxy. Even the greatest photos in the world won't show how good a car is in the flesh or hides that under the skins its nowt but filler, rust and knocky big ends; and a car's ultimate value is only worth what someone will want to pay for it. Forget your Glass's guides and Parker's valuations - it doesn't matter what value they say if nobody wants the car.

I suspect alot are probably veiled for sale adverts (i.e say whats it worth, in hope that someone will PM them interested in buying it).

No never seen that one, anyone post a link?

P.S does anyone have any info if I should fit a vta dump valve or not or if 22mpg is about average in a Scoob? :wonder:

Red Rocket 11166 14 January 2009 07:05 PM

Ban people who start stupid threads like this.:D

scoobynutta555 14 January 2009 07:07 PM

I thought I recently saw that these threads should be posted in the 'sale' sections. Winds me up a bit really. It's the owners getting some lazy advertising without either researching the price properly and trying to reach a larger audience.

Maybe if cars were priced realistically in the first place there wouldn't be several pages of TTT by the delusional owners nor the need to 'spam' general. Look at mostly any thread in the for sale section selling Imprezas and you'll see cars hanging around for months at some laughable price.

weeebell 14 January 2009 07:13 PM

Some people genuinley dont know how much to put their cars up for sale for. Parkers doesnt give a guide for Imprezas that have been mapped or not:lol1:, so I guess people just want a few prices just to see what people would be prepared to pay for them before wasting there hard earned advertising it in Auto Trader etc, caus lets face it, its not cheap.
And before you start, yes, I know it doesnt cost anything to place an add in the for sale section but its not exactly regional, is it?

I should have seen that one coming :D

Kieran_Burns 14 January 2009 08:26 PM

For the record - "what's it worth?" posts in the For Sale section will be deleted (as per forum rules) so if you see them there, please hit the RTM button

Connor_scotland 14 January 2009 08:29 PM

I personally dont mind them as some people will not have the knowledge to know what to sell their car for

wrx_jas 14 January 2009 08:43 PM

Was just about to ask this very question, In which section would it be best to ask for peoples advice.

weeebell 14 January 2009 10:30 PM

How many times have we seen posts with links to Imprezas advertised on Ebay/Pistonheads of 1996 WRX's for £6995??? Then we mock them for there mental prices?
So basically, were faulting them for asking for our valued opinion as Subaru owners for prices for their cars, then if they dont ask, faulting them for advertising their cars for silly money?
There really is no way of pricing these cars at the moment, as the moderator says, it all depends who wants to pay what at the time and as theres no price guide for modified Subarus, I suppose we as a community, are the price guide.
Might be a good idea to have a "what my car sold for" area. You could list your advert, mods, etc, where in the country you are, and what you price you got for it, then we might not have as many "whats it worth" posts?

Chris.B 14 January 2009 10:31 PM

The shy way of saying. 'Make me an offer!'

scoobymad555 14 January 2009 10:36 PM

Perhaps a what's it worth sub-group could be instigated? Personally speaking i know exactly what all my toys are worth cos i'm still paying the loan off lol! But, it's not uncommon for a newbie to buy a motor from a "trusted" garage and be told it's got this that and the other on it which means nothing to them at the time.

Granted you can trawl through the for sale sections on here, check fleabay and google for new prices etc but, new prices don't necessarily reflect a second hand value and some of the prices people post stuff up for on fleabay and sometimes on here aswell are total dreamland numbers that just aren't close to being what somethings actually worth.

If it was a sub-section of the for sale group for example, peeps could ask away to their hearts content without cluttering the other forum groups and, it'd be close to being in the right place assuming they wanted to sell it rather than know its value for something like insurance purposes :)

just my two pennies worth though :D lol

Lisawrx 15 January 2009 12:56 AM

I'll be honest, I don't have an answer to this. It is against the rules to post without a price in the for sale sections, and we appreciate this being reported when it happens, in case we miss it. But I think some fair points have been made here.

I personally find it as frustrating as the next person when someone asks the question to basically ask for offers. However, there wil be people out there with little idea, and relying on some places is not necessarily a good idea. I'd rather someone tried to get at least a rough idea from a specific source than just go for the obvious choices, and risk a slating for being unrealistic. Even asking somewhere like here will not give definite answers, but may give a better region of price.

I could understand the frustration tbh more, if these came up every other thread, but they don't. Yes it may be irritating for some, so just ignore, but this doesn't go against the rules. I'm sure most people would rather some research was done into pricing, even if that does include on here, than just post for sale threads with no price. We can't have it all ways.

I would think that a sub-forum to the market place with a "price information request" or similar in the heading wouldn't be beyond the realms of acheivable.
Its not just cars that are hard to price, high value mods are also tricky and there are requests for this also.
However, the OP in each case has to accept that in asking for opinion s/he will get just that and it might not be to pleasant to taste so a large warning would be prudent. :lol1:

I freely admit that I get wound up easily, too easily by incorrectly placed posts, General seems to be a stomping ground for the lazy and/or ignorant who think "so what if it gets moved, let the mods put in the work".
A few vapings of threads inappropriately placed (rather than moving) would sharpen people up a bit ;)

I don't mind either. Although if they ask the question they should be prepared for some bad news. Watching pistonheads for a while tells you which are going to sell quickly and which will still be around next xmas.

Whos Ken Block BTW?

Well Ali i do honestly wonder myself if you read the terms of reporting :

Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts.

Does posts that are in the wrong section come under any of them.lol

Mac

ALi-B 15 January 2009 11:28 AM

Its seems from the RTMs we get, nobody has ever read that. ;)

Yes, you can use it to report posts that are problematic; and that includes threads in the incorrect sections.

But generally speaking, posts are only moved from the general section after they fall off page one (usually technical threads). Unless they are obviously in the incorrect section and get reported.

Terminator X 15 January 2009 01:39 PM

Nature of the beast fella. It's hard work selling a car at any time especially so at the mo, coupled with the specialist nature of the Scoob = long time on for sale forum(s). I'm quite happy to wait for the right buyer to come along (they always do) than give my stuff away for peanuts.

TX.

They wind me up but only because they are in general, i also think there should be a sub forum for them.
