gym question ?? suplement drinks/bars
hi guys
i wanna pick your brains quickly i have been going to a weights gym near me for the last three or so months and have had programs made up for me for the different machines /weights ect which work all the mucsel areas on the body , i have noticed a good change in my fitness and body shape muscular wise and i am pleased with the results so far . i was just wondering if there are and drinks/ bars that help the process of weight training (speed it up ) without steriods obviously , that also help the body while doing so ?? i know there are shakes ect and was wondering what people use on here and whats best . any help appreciated guys cheers mags |

It depends whether you are on about energy bars to help you train or something to help build muscle, i.e. Protein Bars or powders, when I was into weight training I just tried to eat more quality protein (Basically Eggs and Chicken) and train hard, if I needed Energy before training the fruit is the best thing, forget all the Lucozade type stuff, its just sugary water, might as well have a brew and some natural sugar from fruit.

No miracle fix, eat rest and train hard, and lots of patience!!
However i have this with some oats in a blender if ive hard a hard day or training session BSD™ Regenerate - 2.5kg [Tubbed] And this to give me a non stimulant kick as i train nights. Something I wrote on a similar previous thread:
"Dont forget cardio, at least 15mins before starting each work out if you want to burn some fat. 1.5 grams of protein per lb of your body weight Lots of smaller meals rather than 3 large meals Min 2 litres of water Complex carbs in the morning especially e.g Oats/Bran/ & fruit Must have protein after workout & some glucose (or natural sugars) to keep insulin maintained Not too many carbs in evening Must warm up & stretch before starting & dont overdo it! " |
To begin with I would stick with good food & protein shakes. My favourite one after trying several is Promax Protein shake, just mix with water in a shaker & very easy to digest.

I put on three (healthy) stone in 18 months and swore by Dunns River Nourishments. Yes they aren't specifically designed for the job but I found they were a great top up to a good diet and available anywhere.
I never got very far with expensive powder mixes, apart from creatine. |
Protien:
1. Reflex 5lb Tub (any flavour) - cheap and about as pure as you will get (doesn't contain the artificial ****e other brands do) 2. Reflex Carb Mix (I would recommend getting your carbs from food) 3. BSN No-Xplode - Like adding nitro injection to your blood stream, simply amazing stuff (follow the instructions though) 4. Maximuscle Creatine - Generally Maximuscle stuff is the best you can get but overpriced however the Creatine they do is the real deal and you will notice a big increase in strength and power (tastes like old school Fanta when mixed with water in a small cup) 5. I've put two stone on in 11 months, by just eating healthy and including chicken, pasta and tuna !
Thats with running and going the gym three times a week. All these shakes are too expensive. |
ive put over 2 stone on in about 6 months, but thats cos I am a fat fecker who stopped exercising
Now back into it and all I do is have 2 or 3 protein shakes a day along with normal other meals. Protein I get is a no maker and therefore cheap but is actually good stuff (high protein content / low carbs / low calorie etc) Suppose it all depends on your goals though if it is needed etc |
im already 15 stone so i dont really want to put on to much weight , i just wanna tone up and get rid of some of my excess flubber :)

I've been using Maximuscle cyclone recently and although not cheap, have been pleased with the gains in strength and definition.
Mrs DD has commented on the the improvements I've seen over just training with no supplements. Easy mix with water, tastes fine, no side effects. |
First things first increase your water intake, as it is a simple but very effective way of speeding up yoru metabolism and helping in weight loss.

I've used the excellent muscle-talk forum, and researched the strategies needed to make good gains.
Firstly you don't really need any suppliments. What you essentially need is: - Good balanced diet - Enormous amounts of protein (at every meal) - I'm only 5'7" and nead 150 grams of peroten..that's a lot. 30 grams per meal - Essentially fatty acids - in the unlikely event you are getting them, get an Omega 3/6/9 faily pil - Multivitamin - to ensure you are getting all the necessary vitamins Then understand your goals, as the eating plans will change. Most goals are either: 1 - Gain muscle and reduce body fat 2 - Get really big My goal is 1 - so I reduce my carb intake (not cut out, just minimise) and concentrate my carb intake for the first half rather than throughout the day. I also reduce saturated fat and aim for 2,500 calories per day I also eat little and aften - 5-6 meals a day (keeps motabilism burning), and reduces cravings; i'm never hungry Snacking is fine (expected even), but snack on healthy / beneficial food not junk. So good food is nuts/seads/oat cakes etc Good water intake (2-3 litres ) a day I also started drinking green tea, rather than tea with milk. Maximuscle are great products but expensive. You can sometimes get equivilant products from myprotein.co.uk for a fraction of the price. I only use protein supplements, usually pre and post gym I would say the nutritional side it the harder / more important challenge than anything done in the gym (which of course it still important) Sean |

-L Glutamaine is good every morning.
-Look for Whey protein "islotae" shakes or youl be on the bog all day with whey concentrate etc! -Id stay away from Zma, a bit hardcore & not easy to digest by avearge person easily, I tried it & didnt enjoy it. -Creatine is also good but better later on, after a year or so of training min IMO, otherwise your just pising it away. ps if your doing creatine up water intake to min 3 litres IMO or excpect painful muscle cramps in the mornings :( |

theyve got some good products and fairly cheap.. also have some sections on recommended supplements per goal i.e. strenght or fitness etc. get whey ina bulk and some scottis oats in a bulk and possibley some milk protein and make your own protein shake |
Zma is hardcore lmao, mate it's just zinc, magnesium and vitamin b6.
MM cyclone is just pure rank, it uses hmb which is known to be the worst supplement out there for taste. Mm aren't bad products per-se but you can find far better for a lot cheaper hence my links, for example someone quoted bsn no xplode which is a good no booster and is very popular with bb'ers but a lot of the time it boils down to quality, price and just how effective it is and like mm bsn is expensive for what you get. This is bsn reloaded, again an no booster but better imo, have a nose at the reviews, the guys on muscle talk do rate bsd supplements, gaspari are probably the only that have the edge but cost a godamn fortune. BETA ALANINE, CREATINE MONOHYDRATE, AAKG, D-RIBOSE, CITRULLINE MALATE - THE ULTIMATE BODYBUILDING SUPPLEMENT I use that and their regenerate to recover from hard sessions or as a meal shake for when im feeling run down. Rb5 said it best, you don't 'need' supplements they are exactly that, an addition to your diet not the be and end all, just go in that gym, eat rest and with time it will all gel together. Infact i started out with no supplements, only through time have i found i needed them as work places quite a strain on things and it makes for an easy quick meal or helps me to recover quicker, but more than anything it's for convenience. Bodytronics or reflex are both good proteins, i like midnight express for a night time shake but even old fashioned cottage cheese with a bit of flax seed will do the same job. Remember to train correctly as well, don't be one of these to bump the weights higher because people are watching, or use a light weight only to do your reps real fast, ideally you want a weight you can manage for about 6-8 reps and give yourself a minute or so of rest in between reps. |
