20g turbo repair(DIY)

AS ABOVE, mine has play in the shaft, have seen repair kits on ebay and am just wondering if i could do it myself,,
or would it need to be a specilist job .

would it need balanced, or if i marked everything and put it back the same ,would it be safe ,,

thanks

if i was you, i would send it off to Harvey Smith, Andy f etc and get a good job done

Agreed. I'd be sending it to Andy or Harvey.

Im not shy with the spanners, but IMHO its not worth the chance. If it goes tits up then it could cost big time. Not just a fooked turbo, but a fooked engine too. For the relatively small cost of a turbo re-dress. ;)
Get it done right. :)

Plenty of DIY guides available from the net, or direct from NASIOC.
Service kit available easily for about £70.
I wouldn't say its a complex job at all and the service kit will have new bearing and seals.
If you are worried about the balancing then you could send it to be balanced although a fair few guys have DIY'd their turbos and found the markings to be sufficient to rebuild with confidence.

Don't be baffled, turbos are not a black art they just seem to get shrouded in mystery for some reason but they are fairly simple pieces of kit when you open one up.

At the very least you could strip yours down and have a look at the component parts before sending it away ;)

Turbo Dynamics wanted £250 + postage both ways for an overhaul, this method costs £70, I'd have a crack for nearly £200 saving tbh
