Front mount intercooler and oil cooler help
 

Hi, I'm in the middle of re-building my engine and I'm going to put a oil cooler and front mount intercooler on. I want to know if there is oil cooler kits that do away with the modine cooler as I've been told to renew it after engine failure? Also could any one recommend a front mount intercooler on a budget?

What sort of engine failure did you have? I believe the reason to renew the modine oil cooler is due to debris getting stuck within the cooler...so the theory is if debris exist within your cooler and you put it back on your shiny new rebuilt engine....well you can imagine whats going to happen when you fire it up!

Iv not seen any oil cooler kits that actually do away with the modine oil cooler...only seen them relocate the filter! its a shame the stock oil coolers are so expensive but surly its better to be safe then sorry?

Is the modine thread the same size as the oil filter or is it different, if its the same then I think it will be possible to do a way with the modine, as the filter re-location kits will be the same thread as the oil filter :wonder:

Alot of the common oil cooler kits do away with the modine and put a sandwich style plate in its place. Then the inlet and outlet hoses can run up the front of your timing case. If you have a FMIC then hyperflow do a nice top mount oil cooler with this configuration, this is what i'm using without issue although the fittings that fit in the sandwich plate are better secured with thread sealer aswell as the standard o'ring set up IMHO.

As above some oil coolers remove the use of the OE cooler, if buying the oil cooler in separates and not a kit the plate can be supplied, where as most oil cooler kits will just come with the sandwich plate that fits your OE cooler.

Hybrid intercoolers are a good place to start.

I'd leave the modine in place as it warms the oil up when the car is cold getting it to optimal temp quicker. I fitted a Mocal sandwich plate without any real problems - however make sure you tighten the hoses onto the plat before fitting it as it's a bitch to do in situ!
