Started another thread due to my original post disappearing from the top of the other one... (SDB - methinks there is a bug somewhere...)

Following on from the very successful Jordan karting day yesterday, I'm wondering whether it is worth trying to arrange a Karting session at Daytona in Milton Keynes.

If there seems to be sufficient interest, I'll volunteer to organise it.

To give people an idea of scale/cost we would probably be looking at:

i) Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon
ii) Need a MINIMUM of 20 teams, 3-6 drivers per team, cost of £230 per team (so between £77 and £39 per person)
iii) 3 hour endurance event with 30mins practice
iv) Nice big, long (1.3km) circuit with fast (390cc) karts.

I’ll give this thread a week or so to gauge the level of interest, but as I don't want to be left covering a HUGE bill, I'm only going to do it if there is a LOT of interest (preferably over 100 serious names)

Please respond either on this thread, or to my e-mail address (david@harbige.net).

Dave, the BBS bug strikes if you edit any post 8 times - it comes up with server error on the 8th edit and it then vanishes... beware! :)

Richard

dharbige 19 February 2002 10:44 PM

So it's a known bug, then. Just mailed SDB about it.

I'll just have to update the teams less regularly. :)

P1Fanatic 19 February 2002 10:54 PM

Just reply and only list the team details etc. That way it also bumps the post BTTT (like this one) :)

Simon.

dharbige 20 February 2002 10:20 AM

Thanks for the advice, guys.
Just need some more interested parties now.

Elvis Presley 20 February 2002 10:24 AM

Let me know when we have enough people. Remember, I can probably supply a couple of teams if needed.

P1Fanatic 20 February 2002 11:01 AM

If we are short I can always email around work - could probably rustle up 2-3 more teams if needed.

Edited to say teams as opposed to people!

Josh L 20 February 2002 11:16 AM

I spoke to Dave T-S last night, and I'm sure he'd be up for it. Dave?????

If you could give us a rough idea of a date, then I'm sure it would help, and I could then bully a couple of friends into joining us.

Josh

PS My Prodrive Live CD thread suffered the same fate at your thread. Deffinately best just to post instead of edit.

dharbige 20 February 2002 11:59 AM

I think Bitten is correct about 16th/17th being too short notice to get it all arranged.

Therefore, based on the feedback so far, and current availability of the circuit, two VERY provisional dates are either 14th April, or 28th April.

If I book the circuit, I am personally liable for the minimum race fees (£4600 ) and there has not been enough interest generated yet for me to accept this risk. I need another 10 'possible' teams before its worth starting to make more concrete arrangements.

David H.

P1Fanatic 20 February 2002 01:53 PM

Dave - if you come up with a date then ask for £10 deposit per team/driver so you have an idea of numbers (committed enough to fork up some dosh). When Ive organised one in the past they usually ask for a deposit by X date to confirm your booking and the rest later on. That way if you dont get enough we just lose the small deposit or we pay more per driver - cant see any way they can charge you the full amount unless they are cowboys.

I would just pick a date now - whichever one you pick some people wont be able to make so it makes no difference. I cant make the 28th cos I fly to Florida on the 19th but if I miss it is tough **** - there will always be another one around the corner judging by the interest the last one by Bitten Hero generated.

Simon.

dharbige 20 February 2002 03:36 PM

Simon,

Daytona are very strict, probably due to the popularity of their facilities. I don't think they are cowboys - but they do run one of the best tracks in the country.

They want a 50% deposit within seven days of making a reservation. This is non-returnable.
45 days before the event, the full race fees for the minimum required number of teams is contractually payable, i.e. if the event is cancelled, you still have to pay the whole amount.

So basically, once I've chosen a date, I need to be pretty certain that enough teams are going to turn up (at least 20).
To be sure of this, I'm probably going to ask each Team Leader to pay in full, up front, for their entire team. I'll have a week from reserving the date to paying the deposit and becoming legally bound to the date, and I'll have to get enough payed up teams in this time to ensure I'm not exposing myself too much.
I am willing to put in a lot of time to organise this event, but I am NOT going to put myself in a situation where I am personally liable for £4.5K, without being very sure that everybody is going to show.
If people aren't prepared to commit themselves fully enough to pay up front, then I'm not going to commit myself on their behalf.

I hope everybody agrees that this is the right way to proceed.

David H.

P1Fanatic 20 February 2002 03:55 PM

Im fine with that - sounds like a plan as you have delegated the team leaders to making sure they get the cash from their co-members. As soon as I know the date and can make it I will pay our teams fee. Online transfer would be easiest I guess.

What does the the £230 per team include? Food, trophies etc?

Simon.

dharbige 20 February 2002 04:50 PM

AFAIK, it's just for the racing.

I'd be suprised if it didn't include some sort of naff trophies, but it doesn't say so in the blurb.
It DOESN'T include any food. They can provide food, but it doesn't appear to be that cheap - £7.50/head for "Snack Platter", £14/head for buffer with small selection up to £19/head for buffet with large selection.

Personally, I'd rather find a decent pub!

David H.

P.S. Of the two dates mentioned, does anybody have any preferences?

Bitten Hero 20 February 2002 05:39 PM

You get little trophies and a bottle of fizz (if you're good enough) but no food. There's a little snack shop thingy on-site that does chocolate bars, coffee/tea, sausage rolls and even a few sarnies sometimes. But there's also pubs and shops not far away too.

Great venue :)

Richard

P1Fanatic 20 February 2002 05:40 PM

14th suits me fine (my birthday the next day so youd better let me win).

Jeff Wiltshire 20 February 2002 06:34 PM

Team Weave will be there....
28th would be preferably but we can do the 14th.

Cheers

Jeff
PS: Dave, is this a rematch for not winning ?

dharbige 20 February 2002 08:43 PM

Jeff,

Definately not! We'll probably be entering an office team, and Bob is the only experienced driver. Everybody else has done it once or twice, but I'd be aiming for a top 10 finish.

Will be glad to have Team Weave along.

David H.

Jeff Wiltshire 20 February 2002 09:04 PM

Dave

Just thought there might be a little needle
Cheers for arranging this (if it goes ahead)

My turn to do one at Buckmore Park next ...

Bitten Hero 21 February 2002 06:27 PM

I can probably get two teams rather than one, as I can probably get 6 Jordan guys to come along and win again :D

Richard

As long as your guys have 50 Kilos of lead and/or are old enough to drink :D

P1Fanatic 22 February 2002 01:51 AM

Ah he didnt bring 8 stone anorexic teenagers from a taiwanese football shirt factory did he?

Can we not add penalty weights to drivers cars up to 14 stone (as after that you got no excuse for being a chunk). Man my mate is 6ft 8 and still only 11stone LOL!

Jeff Wiltshire 22 February 2002 06:28 AM

:)

They won.....

I think they should have to have 2 drivers in the kart at the same time...just to make it fair :)

Jeff

Bitten Hero 22 February 2002 08:50 AM

Ah, you're just jealous cos you 'only' came second :) Anyway, they're not that tiny - Hoppy Junior was the smallest/lightest there on the day!

:)

Richard

Jeff Wiltshire 22 February 2002 09:18 AM

I've been sulking all week......:)

I asked the guy on the top step of the rostrum if he was old enough to drive :D He didn't answer just looked at me in a sort of 'old person alert' way...he's probable never heard of Jimi Hendrick..and thinks Blue/Ear' say/etc are the height of musical taste...sniff...I'm getting old...

Jeff

dharbige 22 February 2002 09:23 AM

Richard,

Dunno what you're being so smug about - I hear you were chucked out of your own team (aka the Bitten Heroes) for being too fat, too old and too slow. :):)

Not that I would propagate such shameless gossip! :)
