how much oil goes through the turbo per min?

i have fitted a TD06 25G turbo to the bottom, front drivers side of my 94 sti (rs200 replica, look in projects) now its in, i need to fit a scavenging oil pump as the oil return pipe is lower than the level of oil in the sump, i need to know how much oil per minute goes through the turbo, i doubt that anyone will know this but its worth a try, cheers phil.

A fair bit, when I fitted mine I didn't get the oil drain back on right.

A decent sized pool appeared in seconds, that's with a restrictor in the feed pipe ( roller bearing jobbie ! ).

Couple of litres a minute easy, maybe more... and mine was only idling !

Someone smarter than me will be along shortly.

A stock pump has the capability to empty a full sump in around 6 or 7 seconds (check your oil levels!). Flow through the turbo will be alot less than that - a tricky thing to measure without breaking something ;)

Also the 25G will require a fair bit more oil than a VF series turbo.

Feckin' 'ell :eek2:

Oil pump really is the 'heart' of the engine!... If it were to fail; equivalent to a severed Aorta :lol1: (no laughing matter really :brickwall)

BlooSooby 03 January 2009 01:11 PM

So that's about 800ml/sec or 48 litres/minute then?

joz8968 03 January 2009 03:15 PM

Not quite that fast. The oil capacity (Classic, at least) is 4.5 litres; 0.5 of which is taken up by the filter.. So we're talking more like c.600+ml/sec or 36ltr/hour.

Still, impressive pumping action :lol1:

Area 52 Autosport 03 January 2009 06:52 PM

36ltr/hour isn't that impressive ;)

Quite a few factors will dictate exactly how much your pump will be flowing. As a rough guide the 10mm pump tops out around 45ltrs per minute, the 11mm & 12mm pumps flow around 10-15ltrs/min more.

On one of the workshop manual PDFs it has the flow rate of the oil pump set out. Can't remember where though!

ooh i forgot about this thread, been very busy, sorry but thanks for the replies:thumb:
ive got my eye on a scavenging pump that can do 14 liters a minute, would it be enough? as jase said its only the turbo return pipe and not direct from the pump so it will be less liters per min, yes.
also how do scavenging pumps work? because when its on idle it obviousely needs to do less than when its at high revs, how does it cope?

Oi !

Joz, you quoting me now ?

It can't it's just a pump !

So long as it's on when the engine is running, it will have something to pump and shouldn't overheat.

thanks very much for the replies, i bought the pump and im sure it will be all good, if anything it is a little too powerfull for the job but its best to be safe, thanks again, phil.
