CDB ?

i am very impatient and wold like to know if there is a way of telling if i have a CDB before taking the heads off.

Just been reading through silent runnings thread and it seems that there is some cross hatching on the block by the bellhousing where the turbo/up pipe would be (there maybe more on the block elsewhere) is this an indication of a CDB or do all scooby EJ20 blocks have this cross hatching effect?

cheers

if you look at the front of the engine, look down where the rad is, and in the centre between the pullys is the crank sensor, if there is hatching where this is, it is a cdb

jasongtr 31 December 2008 04:20 PM

where the oil pump is?

There are pictures on this thread that will help.

the hatching is there all around where the oil pump is, as said before i havent got the heads off yet so that will be obvious then, i mentioned before i believe i also have lightweight cam pulleys so maybe its had a bit of money spent on it and the previous owner (clueless) didnt realise

just a thought people sometimes say they are covered in these hash marking's but my uk turbo engine was and that wasnt a cdb, i think its specifically that one at the front that determins if its a cdb or not , put me right if im wrong :).

jasongtr 31 December 2008 05:06 PM

oe at the fron? speak english mate, i am new to this malarky, are you saying you had hatching but not a cdb?

M535I 31 December 2008 09:06 PM

there you go mate now in english lol .Look at the pic's that one at the front shows its a cdb .

jasongtr 31 December 2008 09:53 PM

yabadabadoo, its CDB, now however im torn as to sell it (as building an engine looks tough) or keep it to have a go.

what do they fetch if i were to sell it on?

silent running 01 January 2009 11:21 AM

Have a go at a build! TBH they're not that worth a great deal to sell on because there seem to be a lot of them about. Of course someone's bound to come on here and say they're worth £600 and to hold out for that. But then I picked up two, one for £200 as a complete short block, one just the crankcase for £50.

jasongtr 01 January 2009 11:33 AM

ok, i have read most of your excellent thread, was the rebuild more complicated that you thought or can someone handy do it ok?

M535I 01 January 2009 11:34 AM

well i brought mine for 700 abot 9 months ago but that was a complete engine , as a short block about 200 quid id say .my mate paid over a grand for his from grade a subaru !!!

jasongtr 01 January 2009 11:40 AM

i reckon the crank (assuming its ok) is £70 - using ebay prices as a guide so i may aswell keep the block as its not worth much more than a std one - good for when i feel brave enough to build a big power motor

Paid £1100 cash for mine from Grade A Subaru with less than 40K miles on it.

That was complete with turbo, headers, coil packs etc which I sold as I didn't need any of it and made a few hundred back ;)

Been running over 350bhp for over a year with no probs :norty:
