Depends what else you've done already I guess. I wouldn't have them down as the first thing to do seeing as there are many 400+ cars on standard WRX or STi cams AFAIK. But, as I say, if you've done everything else it's possible to do then maybe cam swaps might be worth it to eke a little more out. But then if you're at that stage, a mild street cam isn't what you want?

I've always been told by many pros that the standard cams are good for 450 to 500 BHP. But then again i would probably say these babies would assist in getting that turbo to spool up much quicker.

Just my 2p's worth.

A downside to the flat four, as a result it’s much more time consuming to simply swap cams as in comparison to dare I say an EVO which can be done I a matter of hours. The results I feel is the standard cams have been made do with unless a nut and bolt rebuild has been carried out, and as a result most standard STI cams have performed very well. Ultimately cams will always see a good increase in power if chosen correctly along with turbo, RPM, displacement and so on, but its something to only really consider as part of build to make your money and set up work its best. For example Correct valve spring rates would be needed also resulting in removal of the cylinder heads.

Unless your going to be running over 500bhp I wouldn't bother.

I ran 450bhp on my last car with standard STI 5 heads and cams.

Only now (aiming for 600) will I be using cams. Mine will be coming from Mark @ Lateral buying from him you know they'll be exactly the right ones from your car. With ebay, you never know quite what you're going to get.

We recently had some cams reprofiled by Piper cams for a version 4 STi with a built 2.5 and a GT35R. The stock cams were producing 492bhp @ 1.8 bar, the Piper cams produced 527bhp at less boost.
At the level you are talking about the gain isn't anything like as much and I wouldn't recommend it because of the hassle. If you ever decide to build the motor and aim for big figures, thats the time to do it.
I would also recommend having the heads ported by the guys @ CNCheads.co.uk, they have worked wonders for us in the past.

Was this using the WRC98 profile that piper use Martyn?

I'd of expected a tad power more on a GT35R with that boost??
What was the torque if you don't mind me asking?

R4LLY 29 December 2008 12:29 AM

I wouldn't be surprised at those figures on standard V4 heads. The standard head/cam setup wouldn't flow well enough to fully support the top end power of that turbo.
527 with the cams on less boost is about right. Probably be close to 580ish at the same boost level with the new cams.
