v7 sti engine problem

hi guys, just picked up my 2002 impreza sti v7,started it up this morning and now, when i drive at low revs, under 3,000 rpm,the engine is knocking, when you rev it hard you can hear it but it goes after 3k revs,is this big ends?,its done 90,k miles, but has just be serviced and had a clutch change, its got a scorpion exhaust, downpipe back, dump valve, and the rest is standard, but it does need a cambelt, ive been told a loose pulley or tensioner can also cause the same noise, any ideas?, many thanks, lewis

Sounds like Big Ends to me

yeah, thought it might be,taking it for a trip to engine tuner on monday so he can have a listen,. ,he said on the phone that it might be to do with the cambelt, lets hope so:notworthy

Don't necessarily condemn it as a big end gone - it could be the cambelt idler pulley - see from post # 4 onwards: https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ound-cold.html - which, it seems, Mr Jeffrey possibly thinks it could be too (but rightly, it'll need him to actually listen to the noise, before an attempt at a diagnosis can be made).

Indeed, if you look at dynamix's post # 6, he describes EXACTLY the same symptoms as yours, so you just might be 'lucky'. :)

took the scoob to engine tuner 2day,he dosnt know wot the sound is,?,alan plugged it in on his machine/laptop,no detination or fault codes, engine was fine to the computers, alan reckons it wasnt big ends, but a sound that he cant tell wot it is,anyway the sound travels right through the clutch pedal aswell,?,he changed the cambelt and there was no play in any pilleys or the crank itself, but the noise is still there, any ideas guys, the noise is doing my head in,lewis

could it be the up pipe leaking blowing,as ive read other threads about them blowing at it seems the same,

Seeing as it appears to be 'felt' through the clutch pedal, could it not be gearbox-related (hopefully something vibrating against its casing externally)? Just trying to think logically lol

Seeing as you've just had a clutch changed and the vibration can be felt through the pedal, I'd go for a misaligned clutch.

thanks guys for the replys,im gunna look under the car 2moro,see if anything is lose or anything,if nothing then ,i might get the clutch changed again,do you reckon if it is clutch related, will it damage the engine at all?,just i dont want to take it apart and spend another £500 on a new clutch when if it dosnt affect anything, just make a noise i will leave until i need a new clutch again, thanks, lewis

If the noise has started since the clutch was put in then fire it back to the fitters.

TBH mate i would not waste my time fitting a new clutch.
i would take to a subaru garage and let them find out whats wrong.
I know its expensive but at least youll have an answer and peace of mind.
I mean £500 for a hunch on the clutch i would not do.
Give £500 to subaru to sort your motor properly!
