Be Gentle - I'm New To This, basic info needed please

Well, here we go, this is my first post so if it's a bit pony accept my apologises.
I'm picking up my first Impreza this afternoon. I'm getting a UK spec AWD Turbo MY00, can't wait!!
It's got 113k miles and hasn't been serviced since April.
I want to do the basics to start with-
change oil
change oil filter
change air filter
check plugs

I am an experienced DIY mechanic with a pretty decent toolbox so that side shouldn't be a problem, what I want to know is this - what oil, filters and plugs should i use, and where is the best place to get them.

I'm sure this is completely open to individual interpretation but I have to start somewhere.

Thanks in advance :)

Oh, I live in Poole

Welcome newbie ;)

Personally I use Silkolene oil, genuine Subaru oil and air filter, never changed the plugs! (should do really :freak3: )

There is a Subaru dealership just opened in Blandford St. Mary.

I live in Poole too, so will probably see you around Paul :D

If you search oil using the search facility, you'll find a bewildering array of advice, opinions, etc. on the subject. Any threads started by Oilman, or ones with contributions from him, are well worth reading...

Welcome to SN too. :)

The one thing you should do is pre load the oil filter with oil before you refit it otherwise it may not fill when you top up the engine afterwards.

I also have an MY00 UK car, check your service manual to see if the timing belt is due at 120,000 (60,000 intervals) or the slightly old version with 45,000 intervals (due at 90k and 135k).

Given the age of the car and erring on the side of caution I would get the belt changed and the idlers checked (on 99/00 classics they tend to be pants and need changing as well)

Your probably due diff, gearbox oil and a new fuel filter as well.
