can someone explain gearboxes to me?
sooo much talk of straight cut gears, and dog boxs about im just wondering wtf is the difference between these and a normal manual box - and what are the benefits of them?
all i know is one whines! |
Road car gearboxes have the teeth cut at an angle (15 degrees I think) which cuts down on the noise they make - but it does sap power. Racing boxes are cut straight across so they are noisy as **** but you do get a free power increase. They are usually stronger as well.
A dog box means no synchro so also stronger - but more tricky to use. |
+ bhp from a gearbox then? wowzers!
|
Yes but important to note that your engine doesn’t pump out more bhp
you just loose less transmitting it to the road but I doubt you could live with a straight cut box on the road (its what gives the WRC cars their distinctive whine) Too noisy -- if you want to experience what it would be like -- drive everywhere in reverse -- that’s straight cut!! |
now you mention it, i now get why reverse whines lol!
|
how much are straight cut gears?
|
3k roughly fitted...
|
f**k!
|
yup - 6 speed or PPG straight cut works out roughly the same - straight cut more competition orientated as the whine will go through your head on the road, even though 5th is usually oem
Don't bother with either unless you're running 350bhp+ I've got a P1 standard gearbox and I'm running 440bhp/380 ftlb torque |
all depends on how much power the car makes, hoping for 350+ depending on how well the gearbox takes it!
