I remember them well in the 70's- brand new: they were heaps of rubbish then, dripping oil and failing to start. :wonder: how/why you'd save one now I do not know. |
I've tried hugging a Marina and still can't get passionate about it.

My first car was 1973 beige Morris Marina in utterly pristine condition (it was nice of my grandad to buy it for me but...!!)
You could fit the whole world in the back but that was where it's good points stopped. It broke down constantly (stuck an Ital engine in it when the Marina one died), it had no brakes - and weaved randomly if you applied them, the steering needed almost a full turn before "noticing" your input, it span it's horrible little rear tyres constantly with the almight power of it's 1.3 engine BUT it made my mk2 GTi 8v that I had next feel like an Audi RS4. Terrible, terrible car. |

Although the Marina club may be unhappy about the circumstances of it being bought and what happened i personally think it's part of Britains motor heritage we can do without.
BL cars were ****e ,badly built by 'workers' who were on strike more often than at work. I think when Clarkson did that sort series of programmes of which one was 'Who killed the British car industry' he pointed out how ****e the Uk cars were especially when you could get cheap Jap cars that worked all the time. |
Poor old Marina owners. There's a few noses out of joint there. They ought to be complimenting the TG team on finding a way to make a skip so entertaining...:lol1: :lol1:

The Marina is a shockingly constructed heap. Can't think of any way it could deserve any kind of praise.
Clarkson has got a big mouth and has to expect that sort of criticism just because of that. Les |

It really does not matter if it is a Marina or a Ford etc etc. The fact is the Marina was a clean straight car that was needlessly wrecked and now burnt no one can benefit from the interior either Evil or Very Mad Rolling Eyes They could have got a rusty one off Ebay instead. |
Well it seemed a shame to me. The car was an N plate iirc which makes it 34 years old? Someone had gone to some real trouble to keep a BL car going for so long, madness perhaps but I think it's great that every marque has its enthusiasts. Obviously there aren't many decent examples of those cars left for those enthusiasts and TG have just ruined one for the sake of yet more tedious bumping into one another.

While I would never particularly mourn the passing of a Marina, the truth is that when you're getting older, the cars that'll excite you the most are the ones you remember from your younger days (like "ooh, my Dad had one of those") and it's important that some (even the crap ones) are saved.
Mind you, my Dad used to have a Triumph Acclaim and I wouldn't shed a tear if I never saw one of those again. |
Can't someone just give the owner a Datsun 120Y? That's the car that everyone bought to see what a decent car at the time was like :)

I was well an truely laid in a Triumph accliam ,pretty comfotable i can tell you :D
They also 1/2 honda i beleive and pretty resonable otherwise |

Classic car people are weird, they have a chip on the shoulder and a huge cross to bear on the other, ok, if it were rare and even then, its a car, it provided more entertainment in its last 5 minutes than in the past thirty years.
You should see the death threats the Banger Brigade get off the classic fraternity when they wreck an old Rover or Morris Oxford, if it was worth keeping or economic to repair then they would do it, they only wreck stuff thats too far gone. As for saving Marina's, ok, keep one, destroy the rest, the one left to remind us all that was wrong with the stuff BL turned out back then. |

I am sufficiently old enough to say I test drove a Marina. A lovely blue one. It could have been my first car although it was a couple of years old.
If any car company produced one now they would be sued senseless and out of business in a month. It was so unbelievably awful anyone under 30 years of age on this forum couldn't even begin to comprehend exactly how bad these cars were. Honestly it was horrendous :D |

Aaaah but where would Lotus get their door handles :lol1: I remember my lime green marina 1.8 sport with contempt. The thing had a speed limiter fitted.....if I went too fast round a corner I'd literally slide off the sheepskin seat cover into the passenger seat :D |
