Not got a giant one yet, have 3 'normal' size lops. What type of Giant were you thinking of? Our local Pets At Home gets them in and they taker forever to sell which means they are a good few months old or more when someone does buy them and they tend to be the Flemish Giant. If and when we get one we will be looking for a French Lop from a reputable breeder as they are just bigger versions of what we have now with a good temperament and child friendly/sociable.

The biggest issue with a Giant Rabbit is having a big enough cage to keep it in overnight like a small dog cage and being comfortable leaving it to roam the downstairs of your house like a dog would but having no wires available for it to destroy. It should also be neutered to stop any spraying. House training is a doddle if you get a rabbit from young and it uses a litter tray just as a cat would.

This is a good site for general info Indoor House Rabbit Guide : CavyRescue

We'd like a German Giant but they aren't available to buy:

From what I read about them, they suffer from back leg problems, with this they also get poo stuck around their bum which will need cleaning off.

If you don't clean it the flies will be in and laying eggs on your rabbits arse.

Can you please provide a link where you read this. Rabbits left outside in hutches and generally abandoned will suffer this fate through lack of care and some long haired types need regular grooming. This is nothing special though as care should be given to any pet you have so as long as you look after it it isn't going to get covered in sh!t and suffer fly eggs being laid on it.

Precisely but so many rabbits get bought for kids and left in hutches outside. The parents let the kids look after them, the kids get bored with their new friend after a couple of weeks or can't be bothered to go out and play with it in winter/bad weather and the rabbit ends up suffering a miserable life and dieing from disease through lack of care. I had neighbours as a kid who did exactly that, it was a white long haired variety and just ended up covered in sh!t where it wasn't cleaned out regularly and died young due to lack of care.

Worth talking to these people, have been very helpful in the past
Giant Rabbit Rescue

Fly strike is common in rabbits! the ones that are not looked after proparly, Bravo is spot on.

Giants are great but expect a big commitment from yourself, it is like owning a dog.

Check pet insurance covers your bunny, many exclude or put restrictions on giants, Check that your vet is happy to look after one and most importantly ask about rough costs, most will charge as if it is a dog.

Wait until the new year to get one, most people will think you are only getting one as an xmas gift and IMHO don't get one from pets at home, the link above will point you in the right direction I am sure.

My mate has 2, had them years, 1 has a weird party trick, it stops breathing for a short period of time, this used to be just for a few seconds, as its got older it a longer period of time, they have to rush it to the vets for a shot now,
But their both beautiful and house trained like a dog/cat,
There chewing is bloody loud though.

Pets at home have one in Inverness.

Its a monster. I wouldnt mind one but it would need its own room or something lol

My sister has 2 house rabbits (not big ones, just little lionhead ones) and they actually make great house pets (assuming you can live with them chewing everything!) Really friendly, and entertaining!

They're litter trained, and even though they have the run of the house they dont leave the lounge now as they don't like walking on the slippy hardwood floor in the hall! They also have a free run of the back garden via the french doors in the lounge, and in theory they could get out into the fields behind the garden, but they tend to not bother straying too far from the house now(apart from sometimes tearing down the garden, then back!)

HAHA.

Well the wire chewing bunny met its maker.

The last bunny which also met its maker (mixing his toasties) used to do dig tom, dick and harry to get out of the back garden, it was an intrepid little bogger! :D

We now have a cat that has started to dismantle the xmas tree, bottom up.

M535I 09 December 2008 05:47 PM

fatherpierre 09 December 2008 05:51 PM

Do they not **** everywhere, or can they be trained?

I'd like one but not sure the dogs wouldn't kill it? My terrier's a bit keen.

Nat 09 December 2008 05:55 PM

Yeah, i was wondering that. I'm well up for getting one if they can be house-trained.

Yes they litter train quite easily - my sisters two have a litter tray in the house, and if they are out in the garden, they will go back into the house to use the litter tray, and then back outside!

M535I 09 December 2008 07:47 PM

aas said above they are very easy to litter train , im so chuffed t gettin one i want a white one going to be after christmas now .
