So after Louis in Jo'burg...
Who is up for a trip to World Cup 2010?

I would think that's not done the SA tourist industry a whole lot of good. |

I've been to Jo'burg a few times and I send people to work there quite often. It is okay if you know where to go and are not tempted to go wandering aimlessly around.
It does limit your 'fun' potential. All I did was stay in the hotel (with armed guards on the door), take a trip during my one day off to the shopping centers (with armed guards on the doors) and go to dinner with the people I was working with. Steve |

You struggle even to get a taxi driver to take you anywhere other than the above - they are that paranoid something will happen either to themselves, or you! Maybe its not paranoia though...... This is the only country I've visited where people in the cities live in fear (and I've been to Israel and LA - pre riots ;) ) - in the suburbs every home has razor wire and 10 ft walls/fencing, some electrified and plastered with armed response warning signs. And the shanty towns that surround the cities for miles and miles upon end is a real indicator of what underlying problems there are. Personally, I wouldn't care to set foot in the place ever again. Or any big city in SA to be honest. Out in the sticks such as the wine districts and nature parks its very different and I'd quite happily go around those areas. |
