how much is a new bottom end?
 

preferably a 2.5, although 2.0l would be better than the rattly one i have, just been reading the budget engine rebuild thread and whilst i like the idea of learning how to do it it seems beyond me and i'd muck it up and end up paying someone else to do it with another set of parts

Not sure how much a new one is now as the pound has fallen off a cliff. Probably about the same + shipping and tax at a guess.

i payed around 2500 from API for a closed dock block.forged pistons etc etc walbro fuel pump included...then it cost roughly 1k to have it all fitted ...which was done by RE Motorsport (subaru specialist)

Would the one harvey is selling mate up to my 2002 wrx heads or any 2.5. My wrx has just started knocking from the bottom. So could all my ancillaries mate up to it. Would i need a remap after.

A friends JDM Bugeye started knocking a month or so back. He removed the engine and heads and sent it to a place called auto head recon in Inverness.

All in it was less than 2k for ACL bearings and ACL pistons, block bored out and every gasket to put it all back together. (they reassembled the block)

I think that is a very hard price to beat.

What did they do with the crank? Replace it or machine it?

The 2.5 STi short engine that I am selling is brand new in the packing case and ready to take your heads and inlet manifolds. This short engine is already assembled with crank, bearings, rods and pistons. All you do is transfer your ancilliaries on to the short engine.
Very capable of 350 bhp which is probably extremely conservative and compared to a 2 litre it will pull hard from much lower down the rev range and have loads more torque over a much broader range.

Exactly correct. You need 2.5 head gaskets plus anything else you want to replace. Short engine is £1300.

That's a good price. I went down the 'budget rebuild' route because of my own circumstances - put simply I never borrow money for anything - meaning buying a short block outright was not an option for me, but doing a little work at a time and buying stuff as and when I could made perfect sense. Plus I've enjoyed the learning process.

But if I was in a hurry to get my wagon back on the road and I could fork out £1300 for a 2.5 short block, I'd do it. Building one up isn't too difficult once you've done it once, but the parts alone to do a build all add up and its not a great deal cheaper to buy the stuff and DIY build. If you can afford it then buying a complete short block makes sense on every level.
