hard starting -classic

have been experiencing hard starting every time. had replace the sparkplug/check ignition coil & igniter and all up to specs in resistance.
it a version 3 type r model. but once the car fire up evrything is normal.

have also check the battery and it still very strong reading voltage in power fc at idle is almost 13.8-14V

have also replacing the coolant temp sensor as it is one of the diagnostic in the subaru service manual.

could anyone help me figuyre out this problem ???:wonder:

How would you describe the hard starting? Does the car fail to crank at all? Does the starter turn for ever without the car starting? Does the engine start and then immediately die?

Disconnect the battery totally from the car then check the voltage, if its lower than 12v then your battery is naffed (as I found out, the car does give you a bit of a false reading if you leave the battery on and should hence be disconnected).

I had an intermittent starting problem, some times the car started ok right a way and others I had to crank the arse out of it before it would start. Turned out to be the cam shaft sensor cost 70 quid off the net.

saiklon: yes the car will crank and after long cranking it will start

anyone? this is starting to bug me

If it starts fine when cold and sometimes won't start when warm then most likely the crank sensor. If it doesn't start regardless of temp then the above makes a better read :p

monky: the car will crank without much problems its just take a while to start feeling is like low battery but battery is good

Have you done what I suggested and removed the terminals off the battery then checked the voltage?
You WILL get a false reading with the terminal leads connected.

Crank sensor most likely. You can also check the stored codes on the ECU to find out if the crank sensor code shows up.

I had an issue with mine frequently not hot starting - changed crank sensor and coolant temp sensors : not really any change. Change cam sensor - sorted.

thanks for all you input guys will give it a go on all you suggestion

Similar problem with one of our classics, turned out to be the battery, was at 31% starting charge, still fine once started but noticeable upon first start up of the day.

Got myself a new battery now, may be worth getting a full battery cell read out from your local garage. As it's the cells/amp being supplied from the battery that will start it, no point checking a battery once it's running off the alternator tbh.

Could even go to halfrauds, since they do free battery tests.

Hijacking this, my classic cranks 2-3 times before firing, but fires every time. Is this normal?

have tested it using a battery tester but it seems fine. will try to bring it in a local battery dealer to have it check
