TD04 VS TD05 WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES ??

I'm a bit of a newbie to the Scoob I've bought, but here's what info I know on it:

1996 Import Subaru Impreza WRX 2.0 Turbo Station Wagon
Engine Type: EJ20
Model: GF8B5BP
Transmission: Automatic
Is still in km/h and restricted
Turbo TD04 430158

Mods (for now):

Hayward & Scott turbo back full stainless exhaust system
K&N Type cone filter

From what I've read up, the Model is found out by the first 2 letters, so in my case it's G=Impreza, F=Station Wagon, 8=2.0 Litre Motor.

I'm not sure of the BHP figure as standard, maybe someone can throw there 10p's worth in ??

l've just bought an Apexi AVCR (bran new in box unused) and an Apei ECU and Power commander, and was thinking of fitting that so I could up the boost carefully for a bit more oomf, untill I read a couple of the threads on here.

So, I thought why I'm in no rush to get things done, wanting to do everything at once, and reading about turbo upgrades on here, was thinking of getting a TD05.

Found some good looking ones on Ebay:

SUBARU IMPREZA EJ20 TURBO UNIT TD05 92-96 on eBay, also, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 27-Nov-08 19:00:00 GMT)

So......can anyone help out and point me in the right direction please?? I've get plenty of power straight away, and it pulls great, so was wondring what I would gain by fitting the TD05, bearing in mind what I've got planned to fit.

Wondering on a FMIC as well....... :-)

Thanks for any help you can throw my way,

Cheeers,

Mark.

A 99 is 215bhp as standrad.

That Td05 won't fit your car, pre-96 turbos have the entry elbow, post 96 do not (the later arrangement is better).

A TD05 is capable of more power than an 04 (limited to 270-300bhp depedning on suporting mods - a TD05 will be 330-350bhp), but is laggier and comes on boost later in the rev range, so it depends on what you want from the car/how you drive it as to which is 'better', a TD04 hybrid such as sold by Andy Forrest is a good compromise.

Due to the larger intake volume that needs to be pressurised an FMIC will also increase lag (but not spool rpm), but will be capable of making more power more often than with the TMIC due to its worse cooling flow and heatsoak issues, so which is better is again a matter of personal taste!

Loving my TF035-6 with 0.8 bar boost by 1900rpm.

You will also find that the apexi ecu cannot talk to the auto box, you may have trouble with changing gear in that case, maybe an esl board could help you? I am sure someone will be along shortly to give you your options..

Forgot to say (and edit button not there!) that a 99MY car is quoted as 240bhp, but that is tested to Japanese test standrads, test to EU DIN or US SAE standrads and it will give about 215bhp as I quoted!

AP is right, you can't use a PFC on an auto as it isn't configured to send the right info to the TCU, however a 99MY can be ECUtek reflashed.

Thanks for the info fellers, much appreciated :-)

Just re-reading the replies, my scoob is a 1996 model so when The Rookie says 99MY is that a code or do you mean the year 1999?? Would mine then be a 96MY?? Apologies for my learning ignorance lol

As for the Commander not being compatible (cheers andypugh2000) ie. as you say "the apexi ecu cannot talk to the auto box" is that definate?? If so, I'm pretty much knackered so may as well sell it.......

Any help would be well appreciated.......

Cheers fellers,

Cotte

MY = Model Year = 12-monthly period of manufacture

MY99 (Sep 98 to Aug 99).

1996 car... obviously between Jan 96 to Dec 96, therefore either:-

MY96 (Sep 95 to Aug 96)

or

MY97
(Sep 96 to Aug 97)

Cheers joz :-)

Any knowledge of fitting an AVCR??

Mark.
