Wii and PS3 Fans. Are They Really Needed?

How guys,

Just bought the above two consoles for Christmas presents and now I'm getting involved in all the adds and which ones to buy.

All the shops I've been in have recommended that I get get a cooling fan for both computers, as they can get a little hot after continue gaming.

I understanding that a cooler computer will perform better, but as both systems have been out for a year or more are they really needed? I mean sure Nintendo and PS3 made the systems good enough in the first place?

I don't see the consoles being used for anything more than 3 hours at a time, I only say that because of the BlueRay film I'll be watching.

What is the best type of fan to go for? As far as I can see Sony don't make a fan they made by aftermarket companys, I'd probably get the geniune Wii fan for the Wii, keep it all factory and that.

Anyone got any point of views?

I've never needed them for my Wii or PS3. Mind you they, aren't used very much (360 gets most of my attention), so with extended play they may get hot.

I have both and play on them for quite long times when on them and they dont even get touch warm so I say no you cant even hear that there on

if on the other hand I had a Xbox 360 then I would deffo get some sort of fan or even its own mini fridge seen as they tend to go into meltdown IMO

Which shops are recommending you purchase addtional fans for them?

I certainly don't agree that you need additional fans for either console; in fact I'd highly recommend that you steer well clear as you could be risking your warranty by using such 3rd party devices.

I doubt it would invalidate the warranty as Nintendo make them, and as I've found out today so do Sony. So a product that they make won't invalidate it I'm sure.

As for shops that recommended that I get one, Curry's, Gamestation, Comet, Game, and Zivvi.

That's because they want to sell you one :)

I find that extremely hard to believe. Although, I'm always up for being proved wrong. Do you have any links to said first-party products?

can only speak for the wii,

are they really necessary? probably not in all honesty but,

I purchased this item:
Play.com (UK) : Madcatz Wii Dual Charging Fan Stand : Nintendo Wii - Free Delivery
mainly for the controller charging capabilities but it does have an extra fan which can be turned on and off as necessary, along with some snazy blue lights.

We have the wii in a tv cabinet and it does get warm but not to the point that I fealt the need to buy an extra fan however, with the fan on in the charging station the wii stays alot cooler even after hours of playing, resident evil!!!

For the same price as some of the charging bases, I would suggest looking at this as an option and you have the fan if its something you are worried about.

ive played my ps3 for almost 10 hours one day (call of duty online), still works fine and was still quiet as a mouse

You want to watch out when buying cooling fans - some 3rd party items are even detrimental to the console's health, reducing cooling efficiency.

I have both consoles and never needed any additional fans.

boxst 22 November 2008 12:25 AM

I don't think you need additional fans for those consoles. The Wii doesn't run that hot (or even that warm).

I think that the retailers have just cottoned on to something else to sell ...

The suggested fans are probably just upselling methods of the stores. No, I wouldn't buy any extra fans for my consoles. Eventough I am on my 4th Xbox 360, I still hope that Microsoft gets their act together and focus on quality issues of their systems. Why should I as customer solve their issues by buying additional 3rd pary accessories?

Could not agree more.

I was abit aggreived that I had to buy a HMDI cable to hook the system up in the first place. It seems you get the basic unit and then everything else is an add on.

Think I'll give buying a set of fans a miss for both units. Cheers Guys.

never used a fan on my 360 since launch day and now the new xbox experience lets u put the game onto your hard drive so the dvd drive isnt spinning all the time which results in

1) a hell of a lot quiter operation

2) it keeps it cooler
