Ford KA 1998

My girlfriend is looking to purchase a Ford KA. Looked at one tonight, couldn't get it into gear. Pumped the clutch quite a bit and took the top of the brake fluid resivour and then it worked ok.

Could it just be that there was air in the hydraulics (as they arent cable clutches)

Or is it a common fault?

Cheers

My guess would be a knackered slave cylinder, which would cause the clutch pedal to drop and 'stick' rendering gear change virtually impossible without crunching. Slave cylinders aren't that expensive but if that's the problem you might as well stick a full clutch in at the same time for peace of mind.

You could always try bleeding it first and hope that it cures the problem, but if not, perhaps she'd be better off looking at another one as there's loads of good ones out there for little money.

Check the sills for rust on every one you go and see, even newish ones.
