Just got one in stock, £500 cheaper than a 2.0 turbo petrol but 60mpg on motorway/40 round town. . . .

Not my choice of colour. . .

Torque/BHP?

Was looking at one on these at the weekend, much nicer in black.

I was thinking about the 1.4 but this might end up cheaper in the long run if the price difference isn't that much. How does it drive and does it sound like a transit van first thing in the morning?

BTW, dealer said they'd only knock one or two hundred pounds of for a cash deal. Yeah right.

140bhp, the car has just come off a transporter so it has it's blocks on the suspension (will drop an inch or so)

Noisy, as all diesels are. If you're looking at a non-gt the diesel is far better value than the 1.4

Yoou'll do well to get discount on these cars, as they are a "NICHE" model and dealer margins are tighter than the mainstream cars :thumb:

Red "I" signifies 170 BHP engine on Passat/Golf/Touran (Late 2006 onwards)

Well I remember seeing it on the IV for the 150 model but not seen it on the later Golf. Thought it must have been dropped on the newer engine.

Matt - on earlier models it was:

All silver TDI - 105 or 110 bhp (!!)
Red I - 115bhp (I think)
Red D an I - 130bhp.
All red letters - 150bhp.

As stated new "system" is 1.9TDI (all silver) - about 105bhp
2.0TDI - all silver - 140bhp
2.0TDI (red I) -170bhp.

I really like them, seen a couple on the road and they look good. Just need some better engines next year, and an R36 of course...

The first 1.9's were direct injection and were badged.

90bhp all silver and 110bhp red i. The 110 version was originally known as the "red eye" engine.

When the PD versions came out in 115bhp and 130bhp it became a bit of mix but generally the 130bhp versions were red d and i. On later VW models even some 130's came in all silver though, especially on the Golf.

The 100bhp and 105bhp PD versions seem to be badged as they thought on the day and across the VAG brands it's even worse as Skoda badged all PD versions as red d and i and then later went silver.

Always best to check before buying.

The latest 2.0TDi seem to be badged correctly although there is no difference in badging between the common rail unit and the course PD unit.

Oh and the most silly thing of all in the mk4 madness - many 150PDs were badged "GTI" (with a red "I") - I know because I test drove one - and wasn't impressed!

The early petrol mk4 GTis suffered odd model naming too - some were 1.8 GTi (125bhp), then there were 2.0 GTIs (all silver - 115bhp) and then just 2.0 (silver) with the same engine as the GTI (and same car) and of course GTI with a red "I" (same mark as some 150PDs) with a 150bhp 1.8 Turbo. And THEN the anniversary came out with a "GTI" mark (red "I") with 180bhp from it's1.8T engine!!

No R36, as it's (the 3.6) DSG-only, and it won't fit (The box, not the engine!)
it's more likely to be an updraded turbo 4 with 265 and Haldex.

Thought you coult only get the 2.0T petrol for the scirroco.Obviously not.

Its amazing how many cars come out of the VW stable with these two engines(200bhp 2.0T and 170 bhp diesel) for the 'hot cars'.Suppose its just a question of which one you prefer

Have to say,the reason I bought the old Octavia vRS when they were using the same 1.8T lump as the Golf GTI was because the Octavia put out 180 bhp as opposed to the golf's 150

The Scirroco needs another 50 bhp (and all diesel 'sports' cars should be crushed)

Loz - the Anniversary mk4 GTI has 180bhp - but having driven the vRS too, I much prefer it - better handling by miles.

Yep,I remember the 180.Suppose the same as the Mk V edition 30 with 230 bhp?

Seems golf only give a bit of extra oomph to SE's whereas the was no differentiating with the octavia vRS.

skoda cars are a better car from the VAG stable, always score better in the JD POWER survey :thumb: , other VAG marks trade on there cheap snob value :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

being a quick driver has fook all to do with drag racing up the straight bits!!!

Wrong. The anniversary was available in either 1.8T (180bhp) or 1.9TDI (150bhp) versions. Both cars were badged GTI in the old style font. The rear valance was the engine indicator, the petrol car having a cut out for the exhaust, the diesel car having no cut out and a downwards pointing exhaust.

I don't understand why anybody looking for cheap motoring should a) want a new car, b) want a sports car lookalike, or c) be looking to spend the best part of £20k, when a used Skoda/Golf/Seat does it all so much more cheaply.

PS The diesel TT doesn't make sense to me either, but obviously they must be flying out of showrooms faster than they can make them <rushes out to put an R8 kit on the Cougar>

My boss has the Golf GT Tdi sport 170 DSG and although it drives well and feels fairly quick for a diesel, the economy is really poor. He says he never sees 50mpg out of it and usually it's 35-40mpg which is bad for a diesel.

That's interesting. So your boss's diesel isn't very economical on fuel (and nowhere near what is claimed), is heavier and slower than the petrol equivalent, his fuel is 10-15% more expensive and his hands/shoes/carpets/wife permanently stink of derv.

What am I missing with this diesel thing :confused:

My diesel will only do about 25 -28 mpg.
I can sometimes get it down to around 10 mpg.

Don't like the fuel but love the look's why would any one buy a golf when you can get this higher spec'd for less money:thumb:

I have the same car, although a manual. I'm quite impressed with mine. Plently of overtaking punch. OK the 0-60 isn't great, but where in the Impreza I was getting 22mpg taking it easy, I'm getting 40-45mpg out of the Golf driving it briskly. Short journeys drop the mpg quite a bit though. But so would they in the impreza. MPG is always dependant on how you drive it.

I'm that impressed with the VAG diesels, that next time I'll try for an Audi A5 3.0TDI (240bhp).

I honestly think now I'll never have a high performance Petrol car as a daily drive. Will use a Diesel for that now. Have something tasty for the weekend instead.

Red or not I think it looks great, This could well be my new daily driver!!

Ugly, pricey and no doubt not as well made as the old VWs. Dealers have a poor reputation too. I'm surprised that people are still taken in by VW's marketing hype. In Germany VWs are nothing special.
