What software?
 

Our next door neighbor and my dad are members of a local camera club where they have monthly competitions. One evening they went to they got showed a program called 'ProShow' - Photodex - Photo Slide Show and Presentation Software - Create Photo DVD Slide Shows that allows you to make a slideshow of digital images and put them to music with text if you like.

This software is for the US market or can be brought of ebay. So is there any other software that can do the same thing as Proshow, that perhaps is better? more easily available. For PC (and Mac as I would like to have a go).

I'm pretty sure vista will do this for you. (and I'd be surprised if there wasn't MAC functionality somewhere)

Yep you can do it with stuff built into Vista. Windows photo gallery will play a (silent) slideshow, or if you want music etc, you can use Windows Movie maker.

I think most photo progs have the facility as well (Photoshop Elements etc)...

Alternatively, try typing "photo slideshow software" into google. It returns rather a lot of results ;)

When the had this talk, the following month, people brought in their work on usb sticks and plugged them into the laptop which displayed them through a projector.

I was thinking in terms of s/w adobe Premiere as this has a timeline to place and mix together the photos and music together.

It has, but it's an expensive way of doing it :)

Windows Movie Maker does all this. You have a timeline, you can drop photos or video onto it, have fancy transitions between them, and have music playing in the background. All drag and drop with no complicated menus, so pretty much anyone can something up and running within a few minutes. It works surprisingly well for this sort of stuff (better than Premiere in fact) and even better, it's free.

Not sure if the XP version of Movie Maker has the same functionality, but I assume it does....
