it will be the same old self indulgent crap. not the hightlight of my weekend

fatherpierre 01 November 2008 03:57 PM

I hope they have updated it, and given it a revamp as it has become very stale and a bit dull.

j4ckos mate 01 November 2008 04:03 PM

dont get me wrong i will probably watch it

its just getting a bit tired the format needs change perhaps

ScooByer Trade 01 November 2008 04:46 PM

Anyone here watched episodes of TG from the 80's and 90's ?.Seemed to me like a much better show with more car testers and researchers, more of a safty aspect towards viewers too.I guess most of the info they said back then, would now be put on there own websites. Also the challenge thing they do, fair enough if they want to do them that is their decision, but that isn't really giving alot of info etc is it.Yes a DB9 would drink alot of fuel when going 150mph, what V12 engine won't and yes it's quiet until your right pedel is in the carpet.Times have changed alot, things have happened and i can see the standards have dropped.Yeah they are self indulgent and doing that is just showing what they indulged in and included in one of their sections of the show.Great job of trying to keep the show afloat and is a great show.I just think they should go back to their old roots of how TG was made.

Do you want William Woollard to replace James May?

ScooByer Trade 01 November 2008 05:26 PM

Who is William Woollard ?.What i am saying is Topgear needs more people doing more road tests, giving info on more cars etc.Remember Tony Mason he did most things to do with rallying etc.Instead of slotting TopGear in a 1 hour slot why not have their own TopGear channel.

I agree with j4ckos mate, getting a bit samey, that annoying buy something for £2:50, prat around and bang our doors into James' car bit has been done to death. I'll Sky+ it and then I can whizz through the boring bits.

Agreed. It's aimed at 13 year olds and the Eastenders type of audience. I shan't be watching :thumb:

The principal presenter in the 70s and 80s.

ScooByer Trade 01 November 2008 06:27 PM

Oh i was born in the 80's didn't know that.

If you want info on cars, buy What Car. TG is an entertainment show, based around cars.

ScooByer Trade 01 November 2008 07:35 PM

Yeah i know TopGear is an entertainment show, that is why i like TG.One road tester Sue Baker (in 1981) did a 3,000 mile drive across France, just as a test drive for the show. She was in a silver Cavalier Mk2 nothing special, just a thorough test.

dpb 01 November 2008 07:40 PM

Top man William Woollard  :D

, come on - its all in the production..!

corradoboy 01 November 2008 08:42 PM

I agree to some degree. They do need to trim out the stale bits such as SIARPC, ease down on the challenges and focus a bit more on the cars. Last series S11Ep2 was the best of the bunch with the Impreza triumphing over the Evo, Hammond in the RS6 and Clarkson in the AMG Black. If the whole series had been like that I would have been overjoyed, but apart from the beautifully filmed Alfa 8C review the rest of them have faded into memory. This was the first series I didn't bother re-watching, apart from Ep2. I usually watch it online at w*rk, then settle down with a beer at home on a monday night to enjoy it properly, but it just didn't draw me. All the way back on S3Ep2 when they group tested the S200, Z4 and Boxster on the IoM was the last memorable proper test, nearly everything since has been melodramatic toss.

More of this please

GlesgaKiss 01 November 2008 10:16 PM

I watch it because I find it entertaining: nothing to do with wanting to see cars reviewed. I'll buy magazines for that.

As far as I'm concerned, Clarkson can do no wrong. He could phone up a well respected actor and claim to have bedded his Grandaughter, and I'd still watch him.

ScooByer Trade 01 November 2008 10:17 PM

I did see Chris Goeffy on Men & Motors recently, so still involved with car programmes so why don't they employ him to be on TG.Tony Mason is still wobbling around, know what i am saying.Maybe they don't want to be on TG i don't know.Sue Baker may come back. Also you guys say William Woollard as you guys think he is a great presenter. We don't see enough of the older iconic cars, but obviously a section of them should have never been produced at the factory.

fatherpierre 01 November 2008 11:09 PM

Get rid of the boring stuff like playing conkers with caravans, shooting old cars at targets and the done to death SIARPC and bring in a few more group tests/comparisons etc. and it'll be ok.

About 20 mins from the 60 is good, 15 mildly funny and 25 mins just plain dull.

ScooByer Trade 02 November 2008 12:06 AM

Like i mentioned earlier in another post about Sue Baker they should do long drives, not just on the test track and to a few favorite roads.Basically the show should be the TG magazine really, where the long road tests are on tv and with a few sportscars they will spice things up but not too many.Tony Mason focused mainly on the road racing and rally side with roadcars of rally genes, Tiff was in charge of supercars and of similar ilk.Where is Quintin Wilson ? he with Tony were the 2nd hand bargain hunters. You don't hear recommendations of 2nd handers on TG now. They don't go to auctions and point out the best bargains.I know doing all that would be difficult for anyone, and i don't know if people would do this now, they did it back then though and because most of the crew went away to do other programmes etc, maybe that is the reason people are not tuning to BBC 2.They did almost everything to do with cars, because more than 3 people were presenting and each of them are doing their own part for the viewers.Making the magazine didn't help because that shortened the programme, and as dbp said it is all about the presenters working with the production team etc.Now because Hamster has got background in working the radio stations, why not do a TG radio station without May and jezza.

I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE THEY'LL HAVE IN THE AUDIANCE THIS SERIES?

there used to be a small select few, now it looks like a load of peeps all on there way back from a football match.... with the better looking WAGs on the front row.

why do they need so many people standing around?
