Upgrade My Brakes?
After conversing with a seller on here I've decided it might be a good idea to upgrade my brakes but I don't really know much about which are good and which aren't.
I'll start by showing you what I have currently - a MY99 WRX Wagon with 17" Newage wheels and... Front discs (Black Diamond Combis, I believe) http://cspotinfo.greenether.com/wrx/front_disc.jpg Front caliper (EBC Yellow Stuff pads) http://cspotinfo.greenether.com/wrx/front_caliper.jpg Rear http://cspotinfo.greenether.com/wrx/rear.jpg The seller on here had/has the Prodrive/Alcon 330 mm 4-pot brakes for £600. He said the discs were brand new. So what I'd like to know is the following:
Thanks in advance for your assistance. |
Not sure if the 330mm items will clear the wheels you've got mate from other posts I've seen on here.
Might also be worth having a look at K-Sports - they get pretty good reviews and would probably give the Prodrive stuff a run for its money; not sure how costly they are but I think they're around this bracket? |
One thing to bare in mind with the Prodrive Alcon kit is that the replacement discs are, by all accounts, very expensive.
It is regarded as a very good kit though. If its in good order then that is probably a fair price. There is a Brembo set ups with PF discs and pads available in the for sale section for similar money. Might suit your needs as well? Ns04 |
I've had four different set ups on my car including the original items and the K-sport stuff is much better than the Brembos, even with clever pads and discs in them. Buy it right 1st time (unlike me) and save yourself agro and more money later.

If so, what did you think? |
Cheers, guys.
Can anyone answer my question about the rears? |
I used DS3000 -i.e. racing pads and the they still got completely cooked. Ruined is actually the correct adjective. I use PF pads on the rears. They never get hot enough to do anything on road use but you can feel them doing their stuff on track.

Are they WRX or STI wheels? If WRX, forget Brembo's for the time being, your wheels won't clear them.
They look like 2 pot's on what I assume is the front, what about 4 pots with the godspeed kit? |

To the op.
It looks like you have newage STI alloys indicated by the 2x indentations between the spokes rather than the WRX one's. |

Ah yes - they're quite different when you see them compared.
Thanks, fellas. Any more recommendations? |
Personally I'd just get APs, but they will cost you quite a bit more.
It's what I'm going to be doing as soon with my MY99 as I've saved a few more pennies! Unfortunately I'm still on 16inch rims so will have to be content with a 304mm 4 pot kit, but I'm reliably informed that is more than sufficient for a classic! :) Ns04 |

At least then you have the hardware in place. Re the rear discs - I believe you need actual rear discs rather than just using the fronts. I think this is due to the handbrake setup although someone on here should know for certain. |
