changing rear diff
 
guys need quick help, about to buy a 98 uk wagon turbo, its got a noisey rear diff, what would the damage be garage price wise for changing it? is it a tough job?

also what models can i take a diff off to use as a replacement?

Not a difficult job but the diff is a bit heavy. Changed mine in 2 hours. You need to check the code on the gearbox to determine the final drive ratio.

Also, doesn't the actual rear diff have its FD ratio stamped on its casing in fraction form e.g. in the case of the 4.111:1 diff, "37/9"? Or is this not the case?

Usually the fraction can be found on the main crown wheel within the diff. :thumb:

There are numbers on there, thats if you can be bothered to remove the cover plate to have a look. Another way is to disconnect the prop and remove the drain plug. Mark a tooth with a paintpen/tipex, turn the diff and count the teeth.

Instructions for what mike;s referring to above

Remove oil and end cover exposing the crown wheel.
2
Mark with a white marker pen/tipex a tooth on the crown wheel and on the case closest to that tooth thus giving you a start reference point.
3
Mark similarly the prop shaft flange and case for a start reference point.
4
Turn the prop flange counting the complete 360 degree turns to rotate the crown wheel ONE complete turn and the tipex marks to re-align.
5
You will turn the prop flange about 3 complete turns then a fraction of a turn.
Expect about 3.9 turns (you have to estimate this) for one rotation of the crown wheel.
