Handbrake squeak..?
 

I seems the very loud metal-to-metal like squeak that I've been getting lately is down to handbrake.

First noticed it when going over speed bumps, usually when the cars one up, and also seemed louder on the down bump, iyswim..?

Looking underneath there seemed nothing obvious, then after reading some old posts on SN last night I went out this AM and tried is with the handbrake on a notch or two. This temporarily eliminated it, so I then drove around a large empty car park with handbrake on a notch or two for a few mins and this appears to have resolved it. I'm not 100% sure, as I'm think I heard a very slight squeak just before I got home :brickwall , but either way it's a LOT better (may need to repeat process..?).

So, I take it the handbrake shoes are binding in some way (it seems to be both sides) or could it be rust..? Cars a daily driver, so never stands about for more than a day tops.

Coincidentally, the car passed it's MOT only a few weeks ago and it was just after this that I started to notice it. Is there anything they could have done during the MOT to have caused this. I presume inspecting the linings is part of the test..?

I'm just glad it's nothing serious, as the noise sounded like metal to metal. Just a thought, I wouldn't have thought the handbrake shoes would be worn out..? Cars only just done 40k and still on oem rear pads, although these are getting low ~3mm.

I know this seems to be common, but any thoughts..?

I had similar symptoms on mine, but just after i fitted new rear discs, there'sa lip on the back of the disc that sits quite close to the backplate, well, non oe discs were obiously slightly too big in that area, so, 2 mins with a gringer, and that flange is now slightly smaller..... no squeek.......

update:

I'm concerned that the brake shoes may be worn out (highly unlikely as iirc they hardly ever do..!) but it sounds like it's down to metal on metal..! :(

NSR now squeals like a pig if i coast along at ~20mph and gradually pull handbrake up to stop car.

Am I correct in thinking there should be an inspection hole covered by a rubber grommet..?

they may not be worn down , but have seen a few sets where the pad material has come off the shoes.
No the hole with the grommet is where you loosen off the shoes to get the disc off , I would just take them off to have a look.

abs spring? i dunno....i had my mot last week and failed on needing new discs and pads on the front, and pads on back, they said would be passable if this was rectified so i told them to get on with it. only THEN did they notice the car needed rear brakes for MOT, and only THEN did they realise after removing the rear discs that i needed a new ABS spring or something to pass MOT....suprises me how much they look over things and miss them i guess?

And sorted. Get 2 M8 bolts to assist taking the brake disks off, chock front wheels, raise car and take off the handbrake. Next rear wheels off and put M8 bolts into the 2 holes on the disk hub front, slowly turn each bolt and this pulls the disk away. Once off thouroughly clean the shoes and the inside of the drum, mine had loads of dust and rust comes off when you remove(depending on age).
I wouldn't bother with the little hole and gromment in the back as I found it very fiddly all I did was manually adjusted the shoes so that it feels quite tight as you slide the drum back over the shoes. Do other side same as first and squeak should be sorted plus with my method on the shoes it made the handbrake feel a lot better and properly adjusted.:thumb:
