now to do this does the whole dash have to come out?

how can you do just the middle bit/ matrix bit

a helpful guy off here suggested you can replace matrix by bending / snapping out pipes for old matrix, fitting new one and connecting them back up with flexible tubes.

but if i got something like this:

-bought the car with no working heater, on futher inspection it has been plumbed back into the engine, with a single tube, and not connected to the matrix at all.

am thinknig of getting some pipes, connecxting it back up and chucking some radseal in there? do you think this is worth it? or just get a new matrix and bite the bullet

You still have to remove the dash to change the matrix unit or just the core so you may as well just swap it with the one in the link. As long as its ok in the first place.

I would not bother with radwell (bodging the job) may end up with more problems.

Alternative is to replace the core with a brand new or recondition unit but then you will have to take apart the matrix unit. Swap the core etc taking more time.

If you look closely you can see the each alloy pipe has 2 small bolts securing it to the core. No need to snap them off?

ok cheers matey, a guy on here was suggesting you can get a new core in there, only taking out the middle, but its a fiddly job. how much of the middle does come out?
i know stereo / gauges / din bits come out, but does the whole plastic tha surrounds the gearstick come out without removing whole dash?

You have to remove the complete dash to do this job.
handbrake centre trim section
Gear lever trim section which is also part of the centre console trim section. (radio/ashtray etc)
lower passenger glove box
Lower driver side under speedo trim section
Both side trim panels
Then top front dash trim (near the screen)
Then last top dash section

All these parts of the dash need to be removed near that order so you can see the hidden bolts/screws etc.

The guy must have been referring to swapping the core once the matrix unit was completely out.

There is a diagram breakdown of the dash etc which should help you out.
Even though its for a LH drive model is more or less the same.

cheers for that diagram, have emailed it to my home addy so got it for reference.

what the guy was on about was just removing the center, bending the pipes, and removing the matrix, and reconnecting the new matrix with flexible tubing and jubilee clips.. but it sounds sound pretty fiddly.

only real issue apart from the obvious ones, would be if you have clearenece to pull the old one down and out and get the new one in there.

how hard are they to fit ?i think mines has gone because when i put my heaters on my windscreen steams up!!any advice please?

A day's job. Before doing it, are your carpets damp? If so taste the damp, anti-freeze is sweet-ish.

Check you don't have the air intake set to recirculate, it WILL steam up with no fresh air coming in.

m8 its onfresh air and when i took the glove box out where the matrix splits its dripping water !

and when i put it to hot the steam belts out the vents m8 its bad!!

i just put that inno stop in and it has worked a treat no more steamy windows for this call sign lol good stuff look it up on ebay ppl .

Dragging this old thread up as my windows have been steaming up and not clearing on full hot, the slide switch is set to fresh air, also the floor level vent has a few dew drops of sticky fluid coming out and last night im sure i got a couple of slight steam whiffs coming up.

So im going to use this as an excuse to replace the matrix and get a new radiator as well, probably replace a few old pipes while im in there.

Not looking forward to this job, but glad its started now before i start using it further afield.

6 weeks of ownership in and its started!

Any words of encouragement and useful info welcome
