Most building trades work has died a death of late. Every site I know of has closed down so all those trades people are now scrabbling around for work.

Its good news for the customers as prices are being under cut, but its bad news for us trades guys.

Tough times ahead!

this may be our last week...
But when it all comes back it will be with a bang i recken

More than likely it will go very quite for a while, then pick up a lot - main reason is that new builds will be down, but then people will decide to stay in their current homes rather than sell, and spend a few quid getting work done on it like extensions or loft conversions etc... that they had been putting off as they assumed they would be moving.

Lots of trades are up and down like that though, if you are self employed then you save the money you make when you are really busy to see you through the quite times.

same with a number of decorators i know. there are still people building though as some firms have to trade their way out of the current situation to feed the development loans and just accept that they won;t be making as much for the time being

think you;re right about it coming back with a bang - few years ago barratt, bellway and permission decided to stop buying new sites. they waited in the wings for a year or so and watched land values soar, before jumping back on the band wagon. regardless of size, people will always guess and try to be a step or two ahead - the current situation is just the trickle effect from that. sooner or later someone will start the avalanche and everyone will pile back in, but of course it will take time to trickle through to the trades

I need a couple of ceilings skimmed (one ceiling has a hole in it that needs fixing) and some coving replaced ...

So there is work about, I just need to get some quotes! :)

I'm based in newcastle and contract into persimmon homes. The work is virtually non existant and what work we do get we were forced into taking a 20/30% paycut or get no work from them at all :(
