How do I wireless my Virgin (ex NTL) broadband?

Help, whats needed to turn my wired modem (USB) into a wireless solution. My lap top is wireless enabled. Will any old router work - or do I need to select one that works with Virgin?

Thanks,

Matt.

I got mine from PC World. Just go there and ask someone who works there which one to go for as I think there are different routers for different means of broadband connection :D

:nono:

Do your research before you go.
Leave the Virgin modem connected to the wall and just get a wireless router with an ethernet WAN port. (Or Cable Router as they'll probably be labelled.)

You need to check if you want wireless G, G+ or N and you don't need to spend too much money.

Probably best not to get one from pc world either. Usually can pick one up much cheaper from somewhere like scan or amazon...

Wireless Router, ADSL Modem/Router, Broadband/Cable Router, VoIP, NAS | Broadbandbuyer.co.uk

Is a good place to start. You will need a wireless Broadband router NOT an ADSL router

Linksys WRT54GL 54Mbps Broadband Wireless-G Linux Router

NETGEAR WGR614 54Mbps Broadband Wireless Router

2 possible options above for a cheap budget

Draytek Vigor 2910VG VPN Dual WAN Wireless Broadband Router/ VoIP

that one more expensive. All those are the G wireless standard:)

Do they do an all in wireless one now? So you only need the one modem?

Nothing wrong with USB for a single connection to a cable modem.

Well .. USB can cause:

* slow downloads
* intermittent connections
* system crashes
* difficulties with installing/re-installing USB drivers
* conflicts with other USB devices

So yes there is .. and Virgin WILL NOT support USB if you have a oroblem.

oh and USB 1.0 will only allow connection speeds of around 5mb.

Mine works for me at a good price too. It's a wireless router FFS not a 50 inch plasma! PC World, it's on the shelf and ready to go and even though tech Gods on here think the staff are morons, the basics they usually get right or your money back ;)

Yes it maybe a bit more pricey but you'll be wireless in about 30 mins from leaving the till.

Yeah, and ethernet, wired or wireless and a TCP/IP stack never cause any of those things.

Ethernet is much more stable .. and I speak from dealing with 50+ customers a day !

Wireless is a ball ache too ...

End of the day Ethernet is better than USB .. I cant see anyone disagreeing with that ...

Better get to specsavers then because I am - it depends on the circumstances.

Single desktop PC, near the modem, older generation or less experienced user - USB wins.

How do you work that out ??

USB requires drivers ... how can a less experienced user find that easier than plugging in an ethernet cable .. I think your talking ****e mate.

I want to know why you think wireless is a ballache? :wonder:

Jeez, such a simple question and you lot are falling out

I imagine trying to remotely diagnose the wireless problems of the great unwashed over a phone line could be a bit of a nightmare :D
