MTB off road tyre suggestions

hi

The tioga red dragon tyres on my kona hardtail are shot after a years hard use so looking for some suggestions for replacements. Tempted to go for same again as they've been pretty good, but wondering if there's better tyres out there for tackling mud, downhills, forest stuff? Doesn't get used on roads really.

So, any recommendations please?

Ta

My Marin came with these which are quite good. Fitted to their top spec HT Hydros

WTB Prowler MX Folding, 26" x 2.1" (49/52)

Kenda Nevegal Blue groove. 2.3's Had them on my Whyte 19 hardtail. Very grippy and sheds mud well.:thumb:

Continental Vertical 2.3's for me, really good feel and grip and excellent all round, either them or something from maxxis or michelin for a heavier downhill specific tyre.

Real horses for courses topic this.

Schabwle Nobby Nics - fast rolling, pretty grippy, sidewalls can be fragile unless you have the Snakeskin version
Conti Slash 2.3s - decent all rounder IMHO. Not as big as other 2.3" tyres, I think Conti' have a small ruler. Tends to float and slide if it's really muddy though
Conti Speed King - aka Conti Puncture Kings (certainly the cheaper steel bead version)
Conti Verticals 2.3s - seem to be a love/hate tyre. I've got a pair but not used for ages

I've also got some Hutchinson and Spesh tyres hanging up the garage, can't remember which models though.

Bontrager Mud X have a good reputation for all-round winter use.

If you liked the Tiogas, I'd probably stick with them. Otherwise you buy some different ones, decide you don't like them as much and end up with a garage full of tyres...

Panaracer Fire XC Pro, awesome tyres and they look great.

Maxxis Highroller - IMO best all round tyre you can get. Go for a supertacky on the front for lots of grip and a Maxxpro on the back for a bit more longevity.

Michelin All Mountains are also very good, just make sure you buy the wet weather version as the "All Round" version is pretty useless All Round.

Got them on my Marin, pretty good, and were the tyre of choice when I bought them a few years back.

Another vote for the Panaracer Fire XC Pro's. They were good across rocks/stones and held well in mud, tend to wear quickly on hard trails/road though.

The bottom line is that nothings gonna save you on a greasy wet tree root :D

PS. Panaracer Fire XC Pro's get a vote from me too :thumb:

My Rock Lobster is also on Panaracer XC Fire Pros :)

thanks, gonna give the Panaracer XC Fire Pros a go - seem to be a good choice for the deep mud sections and general cross county around here.

quick question though - come to order off Wiggle and my Tiogas are a 26x1.9

Can I fit a 26x2.1 on? (only options are 1.8 or 2.1), dont really want to go for the 1.8s

thanks

2.1 should fit check you have clearance in the frame for a slightly wider tyre. Also different makes sometimes have different widths, 1.9 on one brand could be similar to say 2.0 on another if that makes sense?

SiPie 10 October 2008 01:34 PM

2.1 should fit check you have clearance in the frame for a slightly wider tyre.
Good advice :thumb:

Know for a fact that my hate had trouble with a 2.1 tyre rubbing on a 2005 Specialised Rockhopper Pro
