How much BHP
 

Hey guys, just wanted peoples opinion on what i am sure has been discussed millions of times, but how much power can a standard classic UK turbo engine handle?
The engine in question is mine which has been rebuilt 9000 miles ago with all new standard components (rods pistons). I know what you are all going to say and yes i should have had forged stuff put in, but i didnt think i would get that addicted :norty: !

i would say around 340 ish, did get told from a subaru specialist that the ver5dont like a lot of boost

I would agree with above, 330-340 at the most. It's more important IMHO to consider the extra stress that additional torque will have on the standard clutch/gearbox. When I increase my UK classic power I will fit an upgraded clutch and will set aside some money for a gearbox rebuild at some time. I'm currently running 1.5 bar dropping to 1.3 bar and producing 312lb/ft and all is holding up well, for now.

what setup have you got on your car Skooby?

I agree with the above as far as mid 300's go. Andy F's website seems to suggest 360 is possible? AndyForrestPerformance

Edited to say - that is engine internals I am refering to. I'm pretty sure if you ran mid 300's, the gearbox would go very quickly.

Up to 400 is achievable on std engine internals with the appropriate supporting mods and A1 mapping. However, the health of the car and intended usage has to be taken into account. Most call it quits at about the mid 300s. Certainly when you get to the mid 300s of torque, gearbox longevity can become an issue; it very much depends on its condition and how the car is driven though!

A classic in the mid 300s is a very quick car, so you're not exactly at a loss leaving it at that! :)

cheers for all your comments guys. the car was owned by a lady previously and she serviced it religiously, but the gearbox has now done 145,000 miles, but it doesnt crunch, clunk or make any silly noises, i have replaced the oil with some shock proof stuff, and i dont drive like a complete arse all the time :)

This is a good thread, as I am thinking about modding my VER5 UK. I am looking for around the 320, as dont want to push it to hard, clutch is uprated already, so its up to the gearbox.

my car is currently running a vf30 turbo, ported headers, full decat exhaust, uprated fuel pump, ecutek tek3 remap and a lightened flywheel, what sort of power should i be running? i have been told 280-300 bhp

Take it to a rolling road and find out.

Maybe i should have said what power would it expect to put out considering the mods its had done

would of thought with them mods and remap, it would of been on a rolling road,

am looking or aiming for 320ish, mines already running 269bhp, but have since installed a full 3" decat exhaust, and it picks up bloody great now, shame it runs out at top end as my TD04 is only good for 275bhp., so me thinks iam alittle over that,

looking at new turbo and fuel pump and a remap hoping to see 310+ and i will be happy, got new clutch coming this week,

with 145k on it then i'd sugest anything over 300 will kill it in very short order.

mine blew at 85k ish running 259bhp 280ftlb, but admitedly i was giving it death on the isle of mann lol

as far as max power i wouldn't push over 350bhp, and keep it near 340bhp to be on the safer side, but if your going that far supporting mods are a must.

I've not heard this before (i.e. boost), is it generally accepted to be the case? I'd imagine it would also apply to MY 2000 classics.

I dont give it death that much, but i agree it probably hasnt got that long left for this world! I wouldnt want to take it any higher than 350 but if the internals could handle 330-340 than thats ok with me.

To be fair, with a car of that mileage, I'd just be saving for a decent 2.5 rebuild, as I think any further power increase is probably "asking for it"

350 is very easy and not particularly expensive with a 2.5.

it havent done the box yet. i was thinking of a 2.5 but i couldnt find any body doing it at sensible money, but you can now. typical!
i wanted to keep all the numbers correct on the vehicle

magic seven is runing 370 bhp with 320 torque he also has a ppg and other suporting mods and thats on a terzo.

anybody interested in the bolt on bits to get you 320bhp??:wonder:


hi all i got a my99 running 320bhp on standard internals and gearbox and intercooler no probs so far the mods are a vf34 turbo, ecutek ecu, and full 3" milltek sports catted exhaust
i am thinking of selling these if anybody interested ideally as a full bolt on set to a fellow my99/00 owner :thumb: or i would sell the car with all this fitted :wonder: poss px anything considered

Yes mate, live mapped on the road (an interesting experience, as anyone who has done this will agree!). I am running the standard turbo fitted to the UK MY99 and the standard fuel pump. When I change the turbo I will fit an uprated fuel pump and then go for another mapping session. A remap by a trusted mapper, I can't emphasise the 'trusted' enough, will result in a totally transform car. Worth every penny.

my cars a MY99 also and running the following

VF35 at 1.3bar max (although 1.4 is common)
STI 8 TMIC
Apexi power FC & Commander mapped by AFP
Sard FPR
Walbro Fuel Pump
H&S downpipe & full decatted magnex
Green panel filter

at the min all is well and its been like that since april, all standard engine clutch and gearbox at i guess id say its around the 300bhp mark and similar torque but i will have to get it rolling roaded

next step for me is a set of 550's a TD05 18g i think and another remap should see me around the 350 mark, so this is a good thread to read :-)

i had a go at the driving bit for live mapping but didnt really know the road, so gave it to David at API to do the driving while Pat did the mapping.
got it rolling roaded the other day and its 263bhp, it has a big flat spot at about 5000rpm, the power line just flattens off. operator toldf me it could be the map needs a bit of a tweak.
