INTERCOOLER FINS QUESTION
 

Hi people hoping someone can answer my question. I have noticed that loads of the fins (i think this is the right name) on my intercooler are bent over so i cant imagine much air is passing through them. I started bending them back but the top layer that was bent over is just breaking away from the layer below it, so i just pulled the top layer of fins off on one section as they are basically ****ed, now that part of the intercooler looks like air will pass through it much better.
My question is can i do this with all the fins that are bent on the intercooler?
Is there a reason i should not take the top layer off?
Sorry if i havent explained this very well im not sure on the technical terms

It'll perform better with the top layer missing than with them totally folded over stopping the throughflow entirely. Would have been better to have straightened them. For future reference, use a wooden toothpick or kebab skewer to straighten them out.

You can buy a 'fin-comb' to straighten the fins more effectively. Not sure who'll stock them in the uk but I'd try asking an air conditioning or radiator specialist first.

Bending the fins back over sounds like a good idea, i was abit heavy handed when i tryed yesterday (patience is'nt one of my strong points). There is still alot more to straighten out, so i know what im doing for most of sunday:lol1:

They get bent over because people use them as tool trays when working under the bonnet (including me :brickwall ) Have had to remove the top layer because they just broke when trying to straighten them.

Silent Running is correct, try to straighten them is best, but dont worry too much if the top layer goes. It's better than leaving them bent over blocking the air flow.

Tweezers will do it, free backache is included, but it'll be worth it.

I used a small flat blade screwdriver, the backs of your legs will ache for days.

You can avoid the whole backache/leg discomfort debacle by sitting on your front panel/radiator (when cold), that's where i sat when wrestling my APS TMIC into place.

Also, if you could train your wife/partner to bring you tea/beer/cocktails every 20 minutes, you should find the entire experience quite pleasant :thumb:

P.S. Try to avoid dropping biscuit debris into the intercooler fins:nono:
