Surging Power

Hi,

I have a '99 Impreza PPP and owned it for nearly 10 years now, clocked up about 125k. I recently had a service and it seems ever since the service, once you get up to about 3500+ rev in 4th or 5th gear you get a gradual lack of power, almost like you lift off slightly, and then it builds back up to normal. The faster you go (and you have your foot down for longer) the more obvious the almost surging and easing off of power. It happens about over 2-3 seconds, pulls fine, eases off, pulls fine, eases off. You can actually hear the change in the exhaust tone as the engine eases off (eg goes quetier).

I've had the mass air sensor replaced under warranty (it went 2 years ago), tried different fuel, the checked HT leads, had new HT leads, had new spark plugs (all under the service) - all have not helped. The car had the turbo refurbished 18 months ago and seems fine.

Any ideas? Must be some other kind of sensor somewhere?

If you are using the standard boost solenoid, then cleaning this out with some carb cleaner seems to help most cases.
