Manual boost controller

Hi everybody ! New to the scooby world and would like some advice please.
I've just bought an 02 bugeye sti pro drive, which i thought, being a pro drive, meant that it has 300 bhp, i was wrong, only 265, but never mind because it's still a fantastic car !
Anyway i was wondering if you can you can use a manual boost controller to get the power up to around the 300 mark without a re-map, as i'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment ?

surely if u crank the boost up enough to get 300bhp then ull land up hittin the fuel cut? or do sum damage without doing it properly??

Thats what i was thinking, but i'm thinking you probably can turn it up to just under the point at which the fuel cut comes in, monitoring it with a boost guage ? i don't know.

yea you culd do that but i wuldnt be too keen on crankin the boost up too far! i think the fuel cut on a classic is 1.2 bar but im not sure on the bug eyes

Any more advice on wether or not i should use one ? I don't want to do the wrong thing.

Hi mate

imho, i would stay clear of the manual boost controllers/dawes devices!
as you never really know what your setting it to.
Also even if you did you would'nt get 300bhp out of it,you might get a hefty bill for a re-build tho:)

best thing to start with is a decent panel filter,de-cat the exhaust, maybe leave down pipe in!

And then how big is your wallet!!!!!!

I had a feeling you were going to tell me to steer clear, it already has a stainless straight through exhaust with just the rear muffler, it has the cat still attached by the turbo, but is there supposed to be a second cat near the mid section ? because it's missing if there is ! Also do you not recommend a cold air induction kit ? All your advice is much appreciated.

Yes, STIs usually have two cats: downpipe (which you still have) and cat-pipe (just after that, and which you are missing). Much will depend on whether you've just had the rear sections replaced or whether the downpipe has a proper sports cat in it.

Also, up to about 330bhp a good panel filter is just as good as a cold-air kit.

MBC, cost £35 ish, will give a good power lift. Should only be fitted by someone with wideband lambda facilities and DET cans. As you lift boost you can run into fuel cut.
Full decat, ported headers, matched up-pipe, Hybrid electronoc boost controller that also acts as a fuel cut defender, cost £80 and you will be looking at 315-330 bhp from a UK STi M/Y 02.
Also consider replacing the fuel pump, around £75, at some point.
BTW, I too have an 02 STi WRX UK PPP. :)

I was just going to fit a boost guage to monitor it, wasn't going to try and crank it right up. Sorry i'm not used to all these short terms for things, i worked out MBC, but whats DET cans ? Sorry, i'm thick ! also what do you mean by ported headers ? Thanks, James.
