I have a MY01 with the standard Potenza RE011 and am getting very uneven wear between the front and rear tyres.

Guess this is standard cos of the way I use the car.. but have been told that replacing 2 tyres is a bad option as a large difference in tread depth f/r will cause differential problems.

Is this right - or just someone trying to make more money... I'll defintely be rotating the tyres after 6k miles from now on.

Toyos seem the way to go?

Toyos are the way to go, but the guy who said dont replace 2 is full of crap.
Try checking your tyre pressures and make sure there all correct and then swap front for rears etc etc.

I love these forums.

The fronts will wear quicker, about twice the rate as the rears on mine.

If you have rotated them now this will allow the tyres from the rear to catch up with the tyres from the front and all four can be changed at once.

Changing all four tyres at the same time for the same tyre will help to maintain the balance of the car, as well as the health of the centre diff.

All though no expert on the effects on the centre diff, there must be a certain margin allowed between different front and rear tyre circumferences, rarely will the two be the same.
