I toured Holland/Belgium last summer, took a triangle and a GB sticker but never bothered with the h/lamps I just dipped them down with the h/lamp leveler to the lowest setting and never got flashed/stopped once .. I could'nt get a converter for the scoob and the diy kits were so "iffy" I decided not to bother.

Which bit of the headlights do I cover/tape up when driving in France? ( I have a MY00 UK Impreza.)

Do I need to put yellow covers on too?

I seem to remember someone posting a message a while ago to the effect that these things are a waste of time/money as you only need to do this if you are abroad for 3 months +

Legally you are supposed to fit converters, GB plate, have warning triangle, spare bulbs etc... I have never bothered though and never been flashed, stopped or had any bother.

You've never had to have yellow lights for France if you car was registered in another country. Even the French haven't head yellow headlights/bulbs for the last 6 years or so - EU dictated all had to be white in Europe. Personally I could never understand why people wanted to make there lights worse and put that horrible yellow paint on them when they never had to??

Caution: What I would watch is your speed on Autoroutes as the Police have recently gained the power to take your license off you on the spot for breaking the 110 or 130Km/H excessively. That could leave you stranded and with a heavy bill to get someone else to get your car back.

I used the halfords convertors and they seemed to do a reasonable job - though as the amount of light isn't great to start with, don't expect too much.

I also put the covers on the driving lamps as I didn't fancy readjusting them.

Having said that I averaged about 110MPH on the trip to Paris and didn't see any police though it was early hours of the morning. (their motoring journos have been getting away with it on the M4 for long enough!!)

From my recollection of the summary of french law I saw, they won't take your car/licence if you can pay the on-the-spot fine. If you can't they will escort you to a cash point (a la Tony's suggestion). Then if you can't cough up, its bye bye car....

May be wrong though....
