Cornwall - recommend me a restaurant

Over there in a couple o week

last time there, went in a place (like someones front room) in between St Mawgan and Padstow, the best food I have ever paid for, old stone property, middle of nowhere on the main road, hope this place is still going

otherwise open to any others

hux309 06 September 2008 11:33 PM

Was this the place, the half way inn?

Index

As you say small on the inside almost like a living room.

You could try this site for ideas, i think rashleigh arms near st blazey does a mean carvery.

Old shire inn is also good, near camborne.

Remember in cornwall you won't get a lot in the way of restaurant food, as your in cornwall, but you do get large portions, so long as you stay away from the tourist areas. ;)

corradoboy 06 September 2008 11:35 PM

The usuals are any of Steins places in Padstow, Jamie's 15 at Watergate or John Burton-Race's New Angel at Dartmouth. We ate at 15 last year and it was OK, but not good enough to make me go back. I'm a Northern skinflint and so like a large plateful for under a fiver :lol1: We always call in at The Slipway in Port Isaac for fish'n'chips on a couple of lunchtimes when we're down there.

If you remember a name or precise location of the place you recommend above I'd appreciate it.

OllyK 06 September 2008 11:36 PM

You'll be there about the same time as me, too late to pass on any good finds in either direction!

LeeMac 06 September 2008 11:37 PM

dont think it was, driving towards padstow, on the left, think on a right bend, exposed stone, think it was their house tbo, walked in, no bar, a couple of others there, thought kin ell but the best food, that was about 6 years ago

cheers tho, sure we'll check em out

We were staying at Mawgan Porth so wasn't far up from us, looked on map - B3276, forget padstow, sure it was before next village up

I'm a tight northern git an all but this place is worth paying for, or it was

Kin 'ell, bit of a vague asking post :lol1:

Cornwall may be smallish but giz a clue as to where you're going lol

Edit:

you did the above whilst I was typing;)

fatherpierre 06 September 2008 11:41 PM

I found Padstow to be poor. Bit of a weird place as Stein owns half of it, and he ain't all that.

LeeMac 06 September 2008 11:43 PM

recommend a scoob specialist as well, emailed one place, fecked me off!

hux309 06 September 2008 11:45 PM

Heh yeah well with cornwall you won't really get nouveaux cuisine just proper down to earth meals.

Old shire inn near camborne is also a good place.

The Old Shire Inn - Camborne Bars & Pubs Reviews - TrustedPlaces

There is a mexican restaurant smack bang in the middle of newquay right next to berties nightclub that's meant to be alright.

Ah got it, it's called senior dicks.

There's a lovely chinese place in st ives but i'll be damned if i can remember it only it's always booked solid.

Padstein will always be poor for food, they won't make money otherwise. ;)

Edit: aah might be new world chinese st ives.

staying near Helston (just been told!!!)

hux309 06 September 2008 11:49 PM

Helston, hmm 10 miles from me then, that one will be hard as there isn't much in the way there, nice place just more loaded with small chippies and pubs tbh.

I'll as me mum in the morning, she's born in st keverne so knows the area very well.

The old shire would be your closest, it's on the helston/praze an beeble/camborne road anyway.

Boro 06 September 2008 11:50 PM

Living in Cornwall, theres only a few places i could recommend but they might be a bit too far for you to travel JUST for food. If you're passing through Camelford, check out The Masons, excellent food, but you might need to book at it gets full pretty quick.

The other place i would recommend is County Arms in Truro.

Good Indian in Wadebridge called The Raj.

If i have anymore thoughts i'll post em up. If you want a good mechanic too, pm me, we use a top class guy in Wadebridge!

LeeMac 06 September 2008 11:56 PM

Cheers boro
looked on map, 1 hour away so prob try the indian place

Will keep you in mind for the mechanic

looking at somewhere to live round there, redruth was one place we have been told to avaoid! any others
wouldn't have asked but lots of replies already on food so.......

;)

oooi i live in redruth and it's anything but bad, you will find most locals have a dig at each other anyway. ;)

You have the meadery in redruth, a good place.

redruth meadery - Google Maps

There is smokey joes that do good meals, it's a truck stop but don't let that fool you. ;)

LeeMac 06 September 2008 11:59 PM

well, i wouldnt know, no offence i'm sure its ok
was told they had curfew recently round there

hux309 07 September 2008 12:00 AM

Granted that's the rough part, but that's only a small part of redruth and not half as bad as they imply, usual media swarming all over it for a story.

LeeMac 07 September 2008 12:02 AM

appreciate the reply anyway,
as long as i dont have to watch the car i'm happy

corradoboy 07 September 2008 12:05 AM

I was just gonna recommend Scoobybits :thumb: A good Yorkshire firm now residing in the tropics ;)

No christ, ive parked the scoob there all the time, it's nowhere as bad as people lead it to be.

Just drive through if you're that unsure you'll be surprised. ;)

Tropics, if by that you mean thunderstorms :freak3:

Nah it's been fine, meant to be lovely tomorrow, can't wait im dying to get back on my bike, im a bit of a fair weather fairy unless in a group.

Here's me getting wet if you fancy a laugh. :p

Cornwall mtb

mykp 07 September 2008 12:16 AM

Down there myself from the 27th, give me a wave if you see my Forester.

We ate here when I was there in March, good food and nice beer: Smugglers’ Den Inn - Pub, food and drink in Cubert, Newquay, Cornwall

In Helston, No 52 was nice, but being another tight northern git, i thought it was pricey. The Harbour in at Porthleven wasnt bad either.

LeeMac 07 September 2008 12:34 AM

asked scoobybits but they didn't want to know

David Lock 07 September 2008 08:27 AM

My Mrs & Daughter are going down to the end of Cornwall this week (Castellack). I have booked a table at Mousehole at 2 Fore Street 2 Fore Street Restaurant which had a big Telegraph thumbs up and looks nice. Should even be able to park this time of year. Have a good trip. dl

Edit to add. IIRC Helston had (has?) a great pub, The Blue Anchor. Used to brew its own beer - "Spingo" - with tubes laid across the garden into the bar. You just need a chauffeur to take you home and a knife and fork when you had a pint :D:

How strange, what work is involved?

Boro 07 September 2008 12:39 PM

Avoid Bodmin, Camborne, Bugle, any of the clay pit areas (of which there are many, lol).

What work do you need doing?

Myles 07 September 2008 02:29 PM

Try this place Ocean Grill - Restaurants in St Ives - Primrose Valley Hotel, St Ives, Cornwall I enjoyed it.

Hi

Asked Scoobybits for a quote for
Cambelt / tensioner change
above with water and oil pump change

they came back asking where i was, I told them where I am and that i'll be in the area in a couple of weeks, never got back

but since that I have been in touch with last owner who tells me he had a big service done incl cambelt at a cost of £1300 so that put my mind at ease and saved me a few quid.

Did want a full oil change, engine, gearbox, diff (if neccessary) etc

But at the same time its good to know there is a decent place to use for servicing, whether they are I don't know and didn't like their customer relations, I prefer to email, that way you don't get the 'we know this about cars' bull****.

zs_phil 07 September 2008 02:52 PM

we went to crantock and got a fish and chips from the beach cafe and can honestly say it was...... sh*te ,we got 3 fish and chips and 2 breadcakes and it cost us £20 and we got it as a takeaway :nono:

must add i am a northerner aswell and around here we can get the same for around £10

holywell bay golf course (gullrock bar) had nice food though

kingofturds 07 September 2008 06:35 PM
