RAF Hawk - Where & When ?

Sodding RAF. If its not bombing british troops its crashing into cars.
Kamikaze pilot maybe.

At RAF(C) Cranwell in the last couple of weeks, alleged undercarriage failure on landing led to the crew ejecting and the aircraft skidding to a halt in the ATC carpark.

i can confirm that this hawk did crash at raf cranwell it was supposedly brand new and being left there to be painted red for it to take place as part of the red arrow display team.the pilot was an experienced officer who had previously applied to fly with the red arrows.I WONDER WHY HE DIDNT GET TO FLY WITH THEM!!!!!!!!!

The good news is that the pilot is OK. I cannot imagine that he was trying to pull a handbrake turn in the car park :lol1:

Wasn't a brand new one, Hawk XX320 has been around for some time it was delivered 27 November 1980, but a low hours airframe as it was in storage at RAF Shawbury for a while but it had come out of storage and was due to be painted red to be a spare aircraft for the arrows as it hadn't had the full modifications. The Hawk was flying under call sign red 11 but not being flown by a dsilay pilot, but was being flown by a wing commander.

AN RAF jet which overshot a runway and crashed was to become part of the Red Arrows fleet.
The Hawk aircraft was being delivered to RAF Cranwell, the scene of the accident, to be painted with the distinctive red livery of the aerobatic display team.
The £10 million-plus jet crashed into a car park, narrowly missing training buildings recently attended by Prince William but crushed several cars before coming to rest on its side on Wednesday afternoon.
Both the pilot and navigator, who have not been officially named, ejected safely.
The Ministry of Defence refused to comment on reports that the pilot was Wing Commander David Firth-Wigglesworth.

Both airmen were taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. Their injuries are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.
Laura Skaife of the QMC said: "Both patients are stable and will probably be going home in the next couple of days."
RAF spokesman Wing Commander Andy McGill said: "The aircraft was on a routine sortie being delivered to Cranwell to be painted in the Red Arrows colours.
"It was not being flown by a Red Arrows display pilot.
"We have no other comment to make on the crash or the condition of the two injured at this time."
Wing Cmdr McGill said that the lost Hawk was not brand new.
A board of inquiry is to be established to investigate the cause of the crash. A civilian air ambulance was at the scene along with a military search and rescue helicopter.
Six fire crews from Lincoln and one from Newark attended the scene.
The Red Arrows were performing in Norfolk at the time of the incident, which happened at around 2.15pm.
Yesterday the Arrows were performing in Clacton, Essex, and Fowey, Cornwall.
They return to the two-day Clacton Air Show today.
Red Arrows spokesman Emma Thomas said the loss of the Hawk "will not affect the displays in any way".
