Civic type R opinions wanted..
i am thinking of buying a civic r type , maybe a couple of years old but there are a lot of different opinions out there, some good some bad....help me make my mind up...:wonder:

I have a good friend who is selling his ctr, it's in mint condition, has a full service history, etc. If you are interested I can find out more. He is selling it because he has been offered a good deal on a Westfield.

I owned an 02 plate before my Impreza. I loved it, a bag of fun to drive and relatively cheap to run and maintain. You will not be disappointed, I would have another one any day

Don't you have to rev them to 6,000 to get any performance out of them. Going from a scooby turbo to a type r would be a real let down. No more mid range torque. They're supposed to be reliable though and far better on fuel.

You do have have to rev them, but that's the design of the engine which is built like a brick sh!t house. Lovely car but I am a ford man myself! sarasquares you have PM.

i have a Mondao as a courtesy car at atm, dont like it, very ordinary :D no pm Suspiciou |
ek9 are nice i test drove one and it was fast as fuk. ive been in my mates new shape and didnt think it was all that fast.

no pm Suspiciou When I said I was a ford man I meant, MK2 escorts, cosworths, ST's, etc! I agree that some of the ford fleet are a bit plain but they do seem to be getting their act together these days. |
No torque is always a criticism levelled at a Type R, you just have to drive them hard to get the best out of them, but when you do they're very rewarding, the best gearbox of any car I've driven and a sweet engine that loves abuse.
In comparison the Subaru is a very different car, undeniably quicker and better handling, but you know... the Type R isn't that far behind, and for balls-out fun I don't think much beats them Some real bargains to be had at the moment as the bottom seems to have fallen out of the market the same as Subarus. |
superb engine one of the best gear box,s on the market enough torque to ruin front tyres in seven thousand miles corners very well for front wheel drive (not new model) wouldnt say no to another great fun just drives different:cool: :cool: :cool:

Great cars, only criticism would be that you tend to sit on them rather than in them.

In my opinion this is the wrong place to ask about the CTR. You will get lots of people saying they are gutless etc. simply becuase they are used to turbo engine power delivery and don't really like having to rev an engine to get the best out of it.
My advice to you is to drive one and be prepared to rev it and see what you think. They aren't for everyone. Personally I think they are great for what they are. |

They are excellent cars, i owned a 2004 CTR before the Impreza. They have an excellent engine & gearbox and the handle very well.
Have a look at Integra DC5's as they have a LSD that the civic really needs to put the power down through the twisties. They also have Recaro seats, and IMO are better looking. |

My other half has one. A very nice drive indeed and feels very well built.

Great car have previously owned 2 and they tick all the boxes. the only thing that puts me of is i think they may be replacing the saxo nova scene not to soon. Was going to get another one after selling my 03 sti PPP but since being at the mcrae gathering am stiking to subaru and going for a spec c now.

The new shape civic does have some flaws though - one of the main ones is the paint job is very prone to stone chips.

People will moan that you have to rev them to see the performance out of them.....and all I can is and the problem with that is............? :p yeah you gotta be a little clever at being in the right gear at the right time but again this isn't a big deal.... Try one, rev it to the limiter, change gear and I swear you will smile :thumb: If you don't, then don't consider VTEC, it is not going to be your cup of tea. |

I had a passenger ride in the DC2 Saloon integra, with Advan Neova tyres, it gripped like there was no tomorrow:thumb: Also, its not hard to stay in the power band, you rev up in the late 8000's and when you shift, you shouldnt go below 6000....;) |
I had a DC2 and can categorically say it is one of the best handling and most sorted as standard cars to ever be put on the road. I loved mine and should never have sold it, but they are getting a little long in the tooth now.
The breadvan CTR is much newer and while not the icon the DC2 is will be uber reliable and give you 85% of the DC2 thrills. The gear change on the CTR is one of the best and with an engine that you can thrash all day long it is a lot of fun. Do please report back when you have test driven one, it will be interesting to hear your thoughts :D |

You caould always turbo the civic cpl racing do a turbo conversion for just under 4K, that will get you 300bhp with 8.2 rev limit, that solves your low down torque problem and still gives you the high revving action you want. I have owned lots of honda and they are vertually indestructible if you know what you are doing, I know of one person running 600bhp through the standard box, and cpl are running very low 10's, from a fwd car amazing eh. The only thing I will say is once you hit vtec you wont be able to stop wanting to hear it, which means you gotta be careful, 1st time I took my ek9 out to show a friend I ended up with blue light flashing behind me. All I will say is its a lot faster than what they were driving .
Have fun trying it out, make sure you ppick some long roads to test it properly. |
