Steering Pump Failure?

After a blast down some dual carriageways, came to the end and slowing down into the roundabout and the I heard a whining noise coming from the front. Rises and falls with the engine revs. Parked up in Tescos, came out and noise gone but by the time I got home, it was back a bit.

Today popped into town and needed a bit of fuel so when I pulled in, there was smoke coming from under the bonnet & an oily smell. Popped it and had a look inside and couldn't really see anything except under the steering pump, there is obviously fluid of some sort. The whining noise was back.

I'm guessing that my steering pump has failed?

If so, what is the consequences of driving it down to London & back tomorrow? Wanted to take the scoob for something. There is fluid in the reservoir. Other than heavy steering, is there any other possible things that might got wrong if I continue to drive it?

Thanks

check the fluid levels and keep checking them, as long as u dont run it dry you will be ok short term,
Thats unless its ran dry do to a leak?
Can you clean it all down and top the fluid level back up and see where its leaking from?
