Any Pump On Your Car?

This question might be me talking nonsense but i'll ask it anyhow:

Can any sort of Pump weather it being Powersteering or Oil etc make a knocking noise if there failing or knackered in other words, last week steering became heavy turning right that was before the knocking started could it be a loose pulley knocking onto something else?

Cheers :thumb:

unlikely mate, faulty steering pump would normally whine, if pulley was slack belt would fall off???

maybe big ends?

When you get a clonking noise when turning tightly, doesn't that normally mean there's something up with the opposite front driveshaft, therefore, in this case the LHS one? :wonder:

he just stated the steering got heavy now there is a knocking noise.

i'm guessing he means its knocking constantly :wonder:

more info on the fault is needed, when it knocks etc etc

Oops, sorry

I reckon steering pump fluid is right low. I had this on my old Clio 16V - really sticking steering and a horrible clonking noise.

First thing, check the level and top up as necessary. Then turn on the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock for about 3-5 times. Recheck the level hasn't dropped - if so, top up again. If it is that, you should notice an immediate improvement when you next drive it.

Thing is though, unless it hasn't been serviced for ages, then there would be a reason for the level to have got way low in the first place - and that is normally a failed steering rack or the pump iteslf (it was the rack that had gone on my Clio)...

Big ends more than likely, was just trying to see if it could be something else i'm clutching at straws really.

No knocking when steering - steering wheel just feels heavy its worse on roundabouts coz the steering wheel is held in the same position for longer, could would wheel balancing effect it the steering wheel doesn't line up correctly when driving straight?

Knocking noise %100 sure is coming from the engine.

Last big service was done at 60k i bought the car when it was at 68k and i've hardly done any miles in it - will check PS fluid tommorrow.

adzer 24 August 2008 11:02 PM

does it knock all the time on idke? or only when u hit certain revs?

Ozzy_555 24 August 2008 11:05 PM

It's not a loud knock at idle but it gets louder when you rev

adzer 24 August 2008 11:11 PM

dont sound too good, does it get faster when revs rise?

i recently had my engine knock when revs hit around 3k rpm only got 20mins of driving before it done it constantly and blew up on me. i aint split my block yet to see what failed but guy from my work thinks a piston might of snapped its rings.

either way its fit for the bin lol

Have you taken the revs near to max... Does it become unbearable - a loud metallic 'heavy' knock from the bottom of the engine. I sincerely hope not

Ozzy_555 24 August 2008 11:20 PM

Will have to check, didn't wanna rev it to hard - will start it up tomorrow and see how loud it really is both idle and reving the engine.

Ozzy_555 24 August 2008 11:21 PM

Will try and get a soundclip on me mobile, that might help

joz8968 24 August 2008 11:29 PM

Yes, only do it just the once for diagnosis purposes. If it is a big end you may get away with new shells and a reground crank... Although with flat-4s it'd be easier to transplant over a full recon bottom end i.e. including the two block halves (I think?)

Ozzy_555 24 August 2008 11:32 PM

If it is bottom end i was looking to rebuild engine it will last a lot longer and hopefully i would'nt have to worry about the engine going bang for quite awhile ;)

Quite a simple test: take off the ancillary belts. If the noise stops you've narrowed it down a bit, if it carries on, look elsewhere....

Oh yes, if you've got the funds, that is best course of action for sure...
