I've said it before and I'll say it again. £8000 is about 35% of the original price which, for a 3-4yr old car, is about right. This is especially true when, with respect, you are talking about a car that was heavily discounted, oversold with umpteen special editions and is about as expensive to run as any comparable car bar an Evo. Were you expecting nearer £10-11k? How is the dealer going to make any money if he gives you that much? Add on the cost of preparation, a warranty, lost interest on the capital and some profit and you're looking at £12-13k minimum. Who in their right mind is going to spend that kind of money on that car at the moment?
Cars depreciate. If they weren't so much fun they would be a TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY! Get used to it. :( |
There are still new old shape WRXs for sale and there around the £10,000 mark. £8,000 is good, in light of that...

Loving your car doesnt make it depreciation proof!
Further to that, it is extremely naive to expect a higher trade valuation from a firm who undertakes to buy any car. They will offer a lower price, which offsets this: obvious, surely? If you are happy to take their offer for an easy quick sale then take it, but its foolish to complain that the offer doesnt suit you: if Imprezas were selling (or even wanted, which they dont seem to be), then you wouldnt be looking at their offer in the first place... |

I wasn't complaining that the offer didn't "suit" me, I was merely showing the kind of offers these places make. I spotted a link on a website and put my car into their online valuation tool out of curiosity. I expected a low price......after all......any dealer just goes for Glass's Guide bottom book, regardless of the car's individual merits.
But a low price is one thing and £8000 is another. I'm obviously the same as anyone that would be selling or part-exchanging a car.....we want the best price we can get for our motors, and botom book price just doesn't cut the mustard. Preparation?? What's that then?? A valet...the car is mint?? Servicing....the car is fully serviced and a second hand dealer wouldn't do an "extra" service in between the manufacturers recommended ones......it would cost them money. As for a warranty......the car is still covered by Subaru as it is an Approved Used car, so that cost is out of the equation. Anyway...you show me a second hand car dealer that doesn't offer a warranty as an "extra".....they all ask hundreds of pounds for warranties that very often aren't worth any more than the second hand bit of toilet paper that most of them could be written on. They even cash in the fookin road tax and then charge the buyers for that too!! Face it.......most second hand car dealers are tw*ts....even the ones on here..........end of ;) :razz: |

Had I been criticising you directly, then Id have quoted you. As I have said before, there are NEW 07 WRX saloons being offered still, for £10,000. Can your four year old car really be worth anything like as much. You need to place a realistic quick sale valuation on your four year old over-supplied low-demand vehicle.

Glasses trade is £43k, best bid anywhere in the country from main dealers and independants (including the main dealer that he paid £57k 12 months ago) is £37k, best offer last month was £40k against book price of £44750 ! You know the used market is on its a**e when 911's are behind book ! When you can buy a new EU WRX for £15k, the used values are bound to take a hit. I find that some Subaru and Evo owners have the same mindset as MX5 owners had 5-10 yrs ago, ie. used to their cars retaining loads of the purchase price and think that is the norm. When things like cheaper imports or drop in the popularity of their car as a second hand buy make values drop like a stone they often struggle to accept the reality. The reality is that if a car holds 40% of its new value at 3 years old you have done very well ! As another example, one of our Mercedes dealers sold a 57k Blobeye STi UK this week for £6800 as a retail deal, they had paid £5500 for it by the way. |

Then again, chopping it in against a brand new STI, so probably a good margin in the new car, or I was very lucky!! |

Is it stilover who is trying to sell his very nice STI at the moment? He's after £12,500 for a younger car with some very nice (non-chav) mods and hasn't had even a nibble. It's entirely likely that any dealer buying any Impreza at the moment is going to have it sitting on his forecourt for a long time. You gotta be realistic. |
