If you go somewhere very cheap like http://uk2.net/ make sure you read the T&Cs properly. They might cheap to register but they have a nasty habit of charging a release fee if you want to leave them at some point.

Great thanks - I don't mind paying the inflated price if it's only a 1 off and the renewals are cheap. I want to get a name for my daughter and all the .com etc variants have gone, but I can get her firstname.me.uk which seems like a good idea.
