Clever idea - I'd imagine that the "touch" isn't as nice. Nor the finish, once it gets chipped

Dan :)

Shark Man 07 August 2008 07:32 PM

They've been doing this to coaches and buses for years now - mainly the ones on lease. Although probably not as well done (most I've looked at are full of air bubbles).

Still, if all the BMW dealer can provide you with is anything.....as long as its silver, then its a good idea - bit of protection from all the parking scratches and stone chips too. :)

R 14NS R 07 August 2008 09:56 PM

they did it on a camper van on wheeler dealers once, only watched it a couple of weeks ago on disc turbo for about then 5th time.

as said in the article, lots of businesses have these wraps done on their cars, especially smarts!

SirFozzalot 07 August 2008 10:23 PM

StickyMicky 07 August 2008 11:13 PM

did you not see the tarten jag that was posted on here last week? lol

seen loads of wrapped cars, the games shop round the corner from us does all the demo cars, minis/clios,big fackin hummers

some of them have been perfect looking from the outside, only the door shuts have given them away, and the fact that every single vehicle is the same colour orange lol

Luther 07 August 2008 11:24 PM

That is awesome..... Anyone know the price of a 'full wrap' or any pros out there?

mart360 08 August 2008 09:11 AM

According to my sources, its a common practice for some German companys to buy there fleet vehicles on mass, and then wrap them in there corporate colour scheme, at the end of the lease/ hire they remove the wrap, touch up any minor dinks and then sell the vehicle.
Because the vehicles are of differing colours, and not xx bog standard, they have no probs selling the cars on.

I seem to recall there is one telecoms company in germany that uses a unique bright yellow as its corporate colour. (seem to remember someone here using that colour :D) Unfortunatly as its a "corporate colour" obtaining parts in that colour off the shelf (touch up spray etc) is very diffcult.

Did PTMW not wrap a Scoob a while back?

RobinSherwood 08 August 2008 10:19 AM

A lot of race cars are wrapped these days. It means we can offer a sponsor the facility of having the car wrapped in their corporate livery at minimal cost and if necessary the livery can be changed from one race meeting to the next.

A lot of companies with loud coloured vans have them wrapped and at the end of their life the wrap comes off and you have a far more saleable white van underneath!

j4ckos mate 08 August 2008 10:25 AM

my van is pretty much like that the graphics are all over it,

subaruturbo_18 08 August 2008 10:45 AM

what about when you open the doors though..surely that would still be the original colour or could they wrap that too?

i think its a really cool clever idea.

You can do inside the door shuts but you tend not to the bonnet and boot shuts. For example when we did Formula BMW in 06, BMW had a new shape M5 as the safety car. The car was white with some BMW graphics on it but if you looked at the car up close, you could see if you are eagled eyed traces of light blue along the edge of some of the seals etc.,.. The car was actually an ice blue metallic and probably ended up after a year on duty as a safety car on a forecourt with 'one carerful owner' on the description!

CRAIGFIN 08 August 2008 11:11 AM

This got a better response than I was expecting.

I thinks it a great idea. I reckon this could be the next big mod for the future because of how difficult it is to change the colour of a car completely notwithstanding the protection it offers your paintwork as well. I've seen plenty of graphic wraps but never a complete solid colour wrap.

Craig.

But if you wanted to remove it, or needed to do some crash repairs, then what?

And for those reasons, i'm out. :D

Pfft. You would remove it like any normal sticker or decal i would imagine, and its probably alot easier than removing lots of small stickers from the subaru rally sticker set.

Crash repairs. Easy. You would fix it as per usual, then have that body panel wrapped again....again i bet that would be easier to do than re cover that certain panel in the correct bits of subaru rally stickers and make it line up ok.

So for that reason...im in :D

Kieran_Burns 08 August 2008 11:30 AM

The question I have is:

Do you need to declare this with the DVLA? Surely you're changing the colour of the car if you have a full body wrap, and if you are PNC'd while being followed and it comes up with the 'wrong' colour, you'll get pulled.

Have to say though it is a great idea!

You could have a pre-cut panel with mainly translucent sections and JUST the decal you wanted coloured - this way it would always line up. Of course this means more expense as you would have to had model specific wrap

corradoboy 08 August 2008 11:39 AM

Sticky Stuff from the WYIOC did this....

Good idea with the solid colour, much easier to touch up and repair, and very protective. In this day and age why are we still using metal anyway ? There must be much lighter, stronger, resilient, corrosion resistant and cheaper alternatives, but I suppose they want cars to rot and be expensive to repair  The Smart is made from plastic and the panels are supposedly very cheap if you do manage to damage one, or just fancy a change of colour

Henrik 08 August 2008 01:08 PM

How much does it cost? I need enough to do a car completely in bright pink (not joking)

spireite 08 August 2008 01:16 PM

Anyone know how much this costs .

Leslie 08 August 2008 01:21 PM

It must be a pretty skilled business to get it right so it can't be noticed. Clever idea, but I don't think i will bother.

It is cheaper than painting which is exactly why it is being increasingly used in motorsport.

dunx 08 August 2008 05:28 PM

Anorak man !

The most expensive paint job to come out of Halewood, was the British Gas escort van....

Does Jags now I think !

Bye now !
