STi Bonnet Scoop on a GX?
I've decided to install a bonnet scoop on my GX, it may be frowned upon as there's no turbo for the cold air to cool down but I've just decided I want one for cosmetic reasons! :lol1:
Thing is, shall I just bond/bolt on the scoop to the bonnet and have it there purely for show? Or do I bother cutting a hole in the bonnet and use it functionally? (Work will be done by a bodyshop btw! :)) Cheers. Tom |

Like polishing a turd?
|
Hmm thanks for the sensible answers...

I would say it doesn't matter how you put it on if its purely for cosmetic reasons however you're better off asking your local dealer :thumb:

They bolt on, so a few holes should sort it....
|
Personally, i would bolt it on, as dunx says.
Can you imagine the force on that scoop at 90mph (on a private road) if there is no-where for the air to go? i wouldn't be surprised if it lifts your bonnet, lol! Couldn't you just get a wrx/sti bonnet with scoop off here or off of ebay? |
or just cut a big hole with a tin opener :lol1:

Think I would look into a full bonnet swap myself...
|
See if anyone with a front mount intercooler wants to swap bonnets

i had a mint 2l sport non turbo last year and i put a bug eye scoop on it. i cut a hole about 3 inches by 10 inches in the bonnet where the scoop was guna go. Then painted the area where the scoop sits black. Then i put 4 bolts in each corner of the scoop and bonded them with fiberglass and filler. Then i got the scoop painted and put on. Finally i went round the edge of the scoop with a clear sealer to seal off any gaps. it looked good because it wasnt bodged and also i had gold multi spokes on it and a sti 6 rear wing, so looked like the real thing. Personally i would never do it again because it was a lot of work, but it was the best looking non turbo scoob id seen around. :)

bought a whole new bonnet for mine, wasnt cheap though. Originally bought a scoop for cosmetic puropses like you mentioned, it came with some kind of silicone adhesive but the scoop felt cheap and easily breakable so had a look on japperformanceparts.co.uk and found a mint sti bonnet.

What posesses people to do this to a non turbo :wonder: just makes them look daft when they are outperformed by almost anything
still each to their own  |
being 19 doesnt help the price of insurance on top of running costs, if everyone could afford a turbo im sure they would have one.
|
Problem is when people like yourself make a non turbo look like a turbo the insurance is sure to go up simply because it makes the car look more appealing to a non suspecting criminal. If you do this and not tell your insurance company, even though it is a minor cosmetic add-on they have every right to refuse the claim (and probably will)
HTH :D |
i take it its a bugeye then ? if so what color? as i have a dark met blue wrx scoop for sale if intrested ?

I reckon buy a turbo bonnet, could work out cheaper, especially if its in the same colour.
If not, then cut a hole in the bonnet. The scoops have quite a big gap, and you can see through them, which means, if you just bonded it onto the bonnet, I'm sure people will notice there's no hole, and it'll just look gash. |
Why bother though? If you cut a hole out water is going to piss all over the engine. If you dont the scoop is going to just act like a small parruchute on your bonnet. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong owning a none turbo impreza, a nicely modified one would look nice. It's when people start trying to turn them into something they arent that problems arrise and I mean this in the nicest possible way.

Just buy a Turbo Bonnet, so much easier.
The scoop is recessed into the bonnet, so just bonding onto a GX bonnet IMHO is just a bodge. You all know what the Saxo boys look like with their stuck on vents, do you really want to follow this look ? |

See your point :) |

I used to work in the ripspeed dept of my local halfords many moons ago and saw some right dodgy bodges :lol1: IMHO any mods you make at this stage should be to improve the handling, or power, if you want to enhance the cosmetics why not add a front splitter or something. |
Thanks for all the input lads, really appreciate. Went to Perkins (boyshop) today and discussed it and we've decided to go ahead installing the scoop and to use it as a cold air feed. The guy knows exactly what he's doing so it certainly won't be "bodged".
I'll keep the topic updated with how I get on. The modification will be declared to my insurance company, just as my others are. Tom :) |

QUOTE] Glad to hear you're not doing a bodge :thumb: I'll never forget the guy who had cable tied his exhaust on to a more than past it peugeot, or the lad who was adament he wanted a dump valve for his 1.2 Nova, the good old halford days LMAO :cuckoo: |
out of interest what are you planning to feed cold air to? as there is nothing under the (imaginary scoop) of a GX? not a dig just genuinely intrigued as even if you have an induction kit none of the air from a scoop will hit it as its on the far left side of the engine (as you look at it from the front)
|
Check the breakers in your area for a turbo bonnet. I did what your looking to do twice on the two RX's that I first had. Bonded the first one. I had no problems with it but I screwed the second one on with bonding to.
I did have the cash for the Bonnets then but if you have thats the way to go. |
