Cloned bank card - claiming money back of HSBC ?

Its finally happened. Went to get some cash out and card declined. Phoned HSBC as I know I have money in there and turns out my Maestro / Switch card has been cloned - fackers have lifted £165 x 5 payments and (oddly) 80p x 5 payments from a "car rental outfit" in Rome.

To thier credit, HSBC spotted it and stopped the card, so the payments might not actually come out of my account.

They can't tell me yet if they will or not, but if they do - has anyone had any experiences of getting their money back?

Happened to me with Natwest.

They took circa £3,000. Took about 3 weeks for the bank to sort out my overdraft (so that I had some funds to use), and a further 2 weeks to refund the money.

Italy's supposed to be a card crime hotspot, so whenever I've been there, I have been unable to get any money out at all!

Good luck with that, happened to me in Bangkok. HSBC decided that as i was actually in Bangkok too at the time it must have been me spending the money even though i was apparently spending money in two places at once (anyone who's tried getting from one side of Bangkok to the other will know it's a two hour job most of the time). Still trying to get the money back, and we're talking Thousands not hundreds

I'm having the same problem with Smile at the moment - 4 x tranactions for about £20 each. Smile are looking into it trying to work out how its happened - some place in the states but some how linked to my account and not just the card. Had to get a written letter from them saying I'm fully covered as at this time they wont issue me with a new account number

Well HSBC have issued me a new card and I have to go through the formal claim-back process but I can prove I was in the UK if needed and not Italy.

This is commonly how its done, they use the small amounts first to see if the card is actually accepted and to hide big spending by making what follows look legit, then they move onto the larger amounts.
